Hi,
I was just wondering if the Core 2 Duos are expected to see price drops by Christmas. I'm interested in the E6300 because I want to build a cheap gaming computer. Will there also be cheaper motherboards available? Right now the cheapest Asus one is $200CDN. I don't want to do any overclocking or anything like that so it seems a bit much.

If you don't want to overclock, why not just get an ASRock? Do you really need ASUS? There are cheaper motherboards out there.

It doesn't have to be an Asus. This will be the first computer I have built so I haven't really shopped for motherboards before and have just heard good things about Asus. There is the ASRock motherboard that is very well priced at NCIX.

It doesn't do DDR2 800 but it does support 667 and I am trying to keep this computer low priced so that shouldn't be a big deal.

I could also just get an Athlon 64 3800+ with an AM2 motherboard for less than what the E6300 would cost. Here's the computer I would want:

Asus M2N-E - $102
Athlon 64 3800+ - $115
Seagate 7200.10 250GB - $92
Corsair 667MHz 1GB - $98
Antec case w/ 400W PSU - $89
Radeon X800XL - $124

Total - $620

I'd like to be able to run Half-Life 2 at medium settings and 1680x1050. Would that computer do?

I would not expect that. The only reason prices are dropped is to increase lagging sales. Unless AMD releases a better moustrap before Christmas, there's no reason to expect sales to lag. Maybe after Christmas would be a better bet.

Maybe I will just go with the much cheaper AMD system. The Core 2's are really only a good value if you are planning on buying something in their price range.

Price drop lower than the current Intel listed price (not the prices stores are gouging at)? Yeah, I'd say we should see something by then. How much would be the real question though. I think Intel is going to try and kick AMD whiles its down. Be just like them to do so. LOL
