Core 2 Duo Owners Beware

I've been using the stock heatsink on my E6600 for over 1.5 weeks - with the Gigabyte DS3, and getting good results, always under 40C or right around there.

After spending all day working on my computer, I went to check my CPU temp, just to see what it was at... 72C!!! I immediately shut down the machine and checked the BIOS settings, thinking maybe that Gigabyte's Easytune was having issues, but the BIOS confirmed the ridiculously high temperatures.

I then shut down and did a physical check of the HSF - only to find that it had UNSEATED on one of the corners, preventing it from making the proper contact with the CPU. I popped that corner back into place, and my temps are back fine now...

Something to be aware of!

edit: 20 minutes later, it's now idling at 25C.

Are you sure the little knobs on top are in their correct position and that when you installed the heatsink you heard 4 clicks as the pins were pushed through?
That heatsink sticks on pretty well if everything is set up correctly.

I'm fairly positive that it was properly seated initially. I had 4 clicks, and the temperatures had been very reasonable. I have no idea how it became unseated, but it must have happened when I moved my office.

Don't you have an overheat warning with the Gigabyte temp monitoring software?

With AsusProbe, I set the overheat warning to sound at 54C, the lowest setting, and all is good.

I vote that you didn't install it properly in the first place. Once installed correctly, it's almost impossible the pics would simply "pop" off.

Nice scare tactic thread title though!

So, you threw your computer around and the heatsink got thrown out of whack. Please change thread title to attention anyone who owns a computer and may have, or is planning to move it.

Attention A64 owners: If you're planning on pitching your entire system off the roof of your house...;)
