Core 2 Duo or Pentium D

Core 2 duo will be better for everything, including gaming, however gaming is most dependant on the video card, so don't expect drastic changes if you switch CPU's but not video cards.

I'm looking to build a new system. Right now I have an agp Geforcefx 5600 256. I was looking at either the Geforce 6800xt or radeon x800gto. Which processor will overclock better?

Definately the C2 Duo...however availability will certainly be an issue for awhile.
As Anand pointed out in the article from Computex,

"There is a lot of concern about the availability of Conroe, as Intel has only committed to around 25% of its mainstream and high end desktop processor shipments being Conroe by the end of this year. After Dell and HP buy up all the Conroes they will want for their systems, there simply may not be any left for the end user to buy in the channel market. Alternatively, there may end up being some supply in the channel market but at significant markups due to a shortage"

if u can wait,i suggest u buy core 2 duo(conroe)when it comes out in july.
If u can't u can buy a pentium d 930 for around $183,OC it to about 4 ghz with a 3rd party cooler,be happy for year and buy a core 2 duo for cheap and a compatable mobo.
