Gaming rig
Intel 2.8ghz D OC 3.22ghz /2gb PC6700 w/ ASUS P5LD2 board. Intel 945P chipset/eVGA 7800GT.

I will be receiving a E6300 Core2 soon and was planning on running the new chip in the old Asus board. If money wasn't a issue then i buy new from the ground up to a top notch system but I am trying to spend as little as possible but at the same time not make huge bottlenecks which would defeat any upgrade purpose.

I want to run the Core 2 6300 in the Intel 945P chipset and was also thinking about upgrading the 7800GT to a 8800GTS. Is the older chipset going to make the CPU/GPU upgrades hardly worthwhile? Do I really need to go to a newer chipset to get the power from the Core2 chip?

It would be great to reuse this board to keep the cost down. IDeas?

According to the Asus page for your board, "Only PCB R2.0(or higher) support Intel® Core?2 processor". The CPU support page is more specific, and says you need PCB 2.01G and the 1207 BIOS.

Wow, I already checked the Asus site and saw that it was supported. I was asking more about it's performance draw backs on an older chipset. Funny thing though now after doublechecking the PCB version, it won't support it so.... this is easy. Either keep my current hardware or upgrade it all. Time to move down the hardware to the Media PC, move the Media PC to the ladies system. Time to play musical chairs with the computers again.

Thanks , your statement about the PCB made me double check that area even though I wasn't asking about that but ended up to be the answer. Good one. Thanks.

I hadn't thought of that. I checked to see if the processor was supported by a BIOS revision (it was) but did not think to look at board revision.

Great catch Aluvus!

We have some Foxconn 945 boards and none of them will POST with a Conroe.
