There are some measurements over at certain websites that show the lower end Core 2 models, the E6300 and E6400 higher power than the higher end ones in terms of power consumption: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-shootout_11.html

If that seems weird:

http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/31327802.pdf

You can see the Extended HALT Power
E6700: 20.0W
E6600: 22.0W
E6400: 22.0W
E6300: 22.0W
X6800: 22.0W

Ah, so there is a valid reason why the higher end models consume less power. It coincides with Inquirer news that Intel will bin the Core 2 Duo CPUs by power, meaning higher clocked parts are better power-wise too.

My guess is however, the best CPU power wise is the E6700. X6800 is more geared toward performance than E6700 is.

The measurements here apparently corresponds very well with Intel's datasheet, 20.4W for E6700 and 22W for X6800.
