core 2 bad for gaming?

i was talking to my freind on vent and he sayd the core 2 was bad for gaming is this true?

I hav not used a core 2 duo yet, but every benchmark i have seen suggests that your friend is wrong.
in most benchmarks (like those found here at anand) C2D has beaten AMD X2's by significant margins. and even other sites that tried to create more 'realistic' benchmarks (i think techreport did an article about this) discovered that C2D is, if anything, SLIGHTLY better than X2 if all other settings/hardware are normailized.

C2D also uses less power than most X2 processors (except for the new EE and SFF models), while producing slightly better performance.

core 2 is definitely the best chip to get for gaming. I've always been an AMD guy, but conroe is just WAY too good to pass up. I was floored at the performance and especially the overclocking potential - my e6400 is currently at 3GHz on stock vcore, a 40% OC without any adjustments necessary. I'm really hoping to hit 3.5GHz, but we'll see...

it compares core 2 with athlon X2 and also the Pentium D 9xx series. As you can see, Pentium D does suck at gaming indeed, but Core 2 beats out comparably priced X2s in pretty much every gaming test.

A Core 2 Duo would make an extremely fast CPU for a gaming system, as they offer much better single-threaded performance than the current A64s. However, if are solely looking for game performance and are on a tight budget, you would get better results with a faster video card and a cheaper CPU.

false, right now, the X2 3800+ and the a64 3800+ are equivelent for gaming. The single core might even pull ahead in some instances. Multithreaded games like oblivion might be different

EDIT: have you used a core duo chip for the desktop? I'm pretty sure the a64 would beat that in gaming performance.

Agreed, the processor isn't as important as the video card. Unless you're going to be able to afford either an X1900XTX or a 7900GTX, chances are good that the bottleneck in your system will be the video card, not the processor. Of course, that doesn't mean you should buy a slow processor.

Just buy the fastest video card you can afford, then spend whatever's left on the motherboard and the processor, if you'll only be using the system for gaming.

no, it's just that it's really not any faster than amd for gaming, as what holds back gaming performance is not cpu, but rather video.

how is that?

unless you're running at very low resolutions 800x600 or 1024x768, etc. C2D is no faster than comparable amd chips. it will remain this way until graphics card get a helluva alot faster.

Or you could just go to any of a ton of places that have preorders for 360ish... Newegg supergouging on new products is nothing new or limited to intel products.
