Cordless phone security

How secure are the latest cordless phones? I bought my folks a Uniden DCT 648-2 2.4 GHz phone and they want me to return it because we can pick up our neighbor's (probably) 10 year old portable phone on our scanner. The manual says it has "Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum" (DSS?) and a digital security code that ID's the handset to the base unit. Based on the this information, wouldn't it be pretty near impossible to pick up conversations unless they were highly motivated to do so?

I haven't heard of anyone tapping in on DSS.

I was under the impression that the scrambling code was randomized everytime you charged the phone. That said, I think your parents' fears that someone will listen in on their calls are pretty unfounded, but I could be wrong. I'm almost certain your old-school scanner won't work, simply because it's in the 900mhz range, but I'm pretty sure that even if you could intercept the 2.4ghz signal, you wouldn't be able to make heads or tails of it.

Sometimes i can hear other people on the phone when i pick up my phone.

Its a panasonic 2.4 ghz, not sure if its dss
