So we've moved into our new townhouse, and I'm looking to replace our existing cordless phones with some new models. Currently we have a 2.4 GHz VTech with terrible static and a 2.4 GHz DSS RadioShack model that works well but interferes with our baby monitor running on the same frequency.

I thought that 5.8 GHz was the latest and greatest, but now I'm seeing DECT models as well. Any recommendations? I'd like to keep the price under $50 / phone, but I'm willing to go a bit higher if the quality is there.

Dunno what DECT is, but I've got a 5.8ghz vtech system and I really like it. The base plugs into the phone jack and all the other bases just need a power jack to transmit wirelessly to the main base station.

DECT does offer better sound quality than 5.8GHz phones. The "6.0" part is just marketing (they want it to sound better to a layman than 5.8GHz); in reality, it operates at 1.9GHz. This is key, because there are a lot of consumer devices (besides cordless phones) that operate at 900MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5.8GHz, causing interference; 1.9GHz is exclusively for DECT.

I have a Panasonic set; 2 handsets with a digital answering machine for $65 @ Circuit City (I guess it's back up to $75 now).
