Egypt 'to copyright antiquities'

Egypt's MPs are expected to pass a law requiring royalties be paid whenever copies are made of museum pieces or ancient monuments such as the pyramids.
Zahi Hawass, who chairs Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, told the BBC the law would apply in all countries.

The money was needed to maintain thousands of pharaonic sites, he said.

Correspondents say the law will deal a blow to themed resorts across the world where large-scale copies of Egyptian artefacts are a crowd-puller.
Mr Hawass said the law would apply to full-scale replicas of any object in any museum in Egypt.

"Commercial use" of ancient monuments like the pyramids or the sphinx would also be controlled, he said.
"Even if it is for private use, they must have permission from the Egyptian government," he added.

But he said the law would not stop local and international artists reproducing monuments as long as they were not exact replicas.

The Luxor hotel in the US city of Las Vegas would also not be affected because it was not an exact copy of a pyramid and its interior was completely different, Mr Hawass told AFP news agency.

But he said claims by the hotel that it was "the only pyramid-shaped building in the world" could no longer be made.

The announcement came two days after an Egyptian newspaper called on the hotel to pay a share of its profits to the central Egyptian city of Luxor, which administers the ancient Valley of the Kings burial site

Somebody has been taking lessons from the RIAA/MPAA in their constant quest for perpetual copyrights, but I have a simple solution for the Egyptian government.

We will abide by your copyrights as long as you are willing to make reparations to all the descendents of the slaves that built your monuments.:D

But can you name the decendants of the slaves and name the slave they're decended from exactly? If not, then you're setting things up for massive fraud...Personally, I don't give a shit if they copyright their antiquities...Why do you? Do you collect faux mummies or something?

It's called using one absurdity to point out another, don't have a cow over it.

Its almost like they want to assert some sort of trademark on culture that existed seven thousand years ago.

Go the way of the EU and this shit will not bother anyone, if any of you fools haven't figured it out yet, MONOPOLIES are AGAINST capitalism and FOR CORPORATISM, do not forget your ideals, sometime power over freedom means less freedom.

I am just glad that if i ever noticed a tracker on my internet traffic, i could just change my isp, not that it could be traced, as the mods here are wll aware, my IP keeps shifting and has no home.

Royalties for exact copies?

Who has ever built an "exact copy" - same size and material (i.e., similar stone)?

I'll be curious to see how they try to pull this off.

If it's architecture, it's a copyright. But that expires after 120 years of it's creation (or 70 years after the "author's" death). So, that bus left the station a long long time ago. And would have expired back in '02 at best.

The rules:

Works Originally Created before January 1, 1978, But Not Published or Registered by That Date:

These works have been automatically brought under the statute and are now given federal copyright protection. The duration of copyright in these works is generally computed in the same way as for works created on or after January 1, 1978: the life-plus-70 or 95/120-year terms apply to them as well. The law provides that in no case would the term of copyright for works in this category expire before December 31, 2002,

There are no international copyright rules. We have some multi-lateral "treaties" about this (Berne Convention etc), but looks like the above rules apply.

Even worse, ownership of a thing doesn't necessarily give you copyright. I.e., just cuz the nation of Egypt owns the pyramids doesn't give then copyrights. It would be the original architect(s) unless they sold or transferred them to the government (which didn't exist btw. The pharohs owned them).

We'll see.

Plus, we all that aliens created the pyramids.

And here I thought that people in Egypt were of above intelligence, having built the pyramids and all.
