Copying my LASERDISCS to DiVX - what's the best way?

Howdy,

Since I have a few rare movies on Laserdisc, and the format is pretty much dying, I'm thinking about putting all of them on DiVX.

From what I have seen, DiVX seems to be the best solution as far as image quality and space. The alternative would have been VideoCD.

I feel a bit overwhelmed by the quantity of wanted and unwanted (and often contradictory!) data available on the Net. What I need is simple directions to the steps to be taken and software needed for conversion (since I'm passing data from the LD player through the Digital camera and into the computer, via IEEE 1394). How do I encode the audio and video files from whatever they will be at the beginning (.avi ?) into mpeg-4 ?

It seems I cannot make menus (unlike with VCDs), but at least I don't lose image quality, so that's what matters. And the DiVX discs can be played with Media Player...

So, there you have it. What are your suggestions? Thanks in advance.

buy an ATI All In Wonder hook your laserdick player to your computer and use ATI's software to record them and covert them

Thanks, no more hardware investments, I have enough. Again, it's the conversion I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do. I'm not worried about getting the data on the HD...

uses any video editing software..ADOBE Premiere, etc. As long as you have the Divx plugins installed, Premiere will have an option for you to output.
I would NOT recommend converting the LDs to Divx AT ALL. Too time consuming for just one video.
capture time = 2hrs approxmate
Converting to Divx = 4-6 hrs per 2 hr video. (dual 933MHZ)
Often times, you would want to convert the video twice, (one to Fast Motion, one to Slow ) to get the best video image.

Also you need ALOT of harddrive space not to mention a Fast harddrive, preferably SCSI or RAID.

Time does not matter here. As for HD space, I'll have a 40GB/7200 rpm in about a week.

I have to copy the LDs because

a) I don't have a player anymore
b) I have movies that won't be put on DVD for a "while" (Russian movies, Yugoslav movies, as well as the original "Blade Runner", "1984" and so on)
c) I refuse to use VHS, or any other perishable format like that.

Anime Knight, thanks for the link!

Is there such a thing as a Divx plug-in for Premiere?

There isn't such a thing as a DivX plug-in as far as I know. All you need to do is install the codec in your machine. It should be available for d/l in the site mentioned above.

The "Blade Runner" on DVD isn't the one that played in theathers back in '82. The orignal film had a Harrison Ford narration and a "happy ending."

I like the director's cut better, but it would have been nice to have both versions on DVD.
