Copying from a DVD-ROM or CD-Writer takes all CPU resources?

I'm currently running Windows 2000 Server on PIII 550@825Mhz and 512Mb PC133 Memory (256Mb is Micron) and using Abit VH6 mobo (VIA chipset).
I have the latest Toshiba DVD 16x/48x and Plextor 8x/4x/32x and they are using the same bus. Everytime I copy from a CD to my harddrive, either using Toshiba or Plextor, it will slow down my computer and if I check the CPU Utilization, it says 100% is used up (the memory resource is ok, though) and it's even worse if I try to copy from both drives to my harddrive (of course). Is it because of the OS? or maybe it's because they are sharing a bus? Can anyone help me? Any suggestion?

Are they in programmed I/O mode?

That's the most likely cause, go to Device Manager and under the Secondary IDE channel (I assume they aren't primary?) set both to Ultra DMA.

I have a similar problem. I get 100% CPU utilization in both my DVD and CD writer when ejecting or closing the tray. Transferring files takes up around 40%. I have DMA selected in both drives, too.

Are these drives attached to a UDMA/66 cable or is it an older 30-pin IDE cable. If it's not an actual UDMA cable, then the drives won't be able to operate anywhere near their peak efficiency and won't be in true UDMA mode, which could result in the higher CPU utilization you are seeing.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the cables. They came with the system I picked up last year but no mention whether it had UDMA/66 cables or not. I just assumed they were since DMA was activated and the BIOS shows mode 4 for both drives. Any way to make sure?

OK, I just looked at my IDE cables and they are 40-pin. I need 80-pin cables to run UDMA/66, right? I have a UDMA/66 hard drive on primary master and a DVD-ROM (Raite RDR-108H) that says it runs ATA/66 on primary slave. Can I keep the 40-pin cable on my CD writer (ATA/33, on secondary master) without affecting the 80-pin cable?

Probably because they're sharing the same bus. I've had 0 probs with win2k as far as burning from dvd to cdrw, but I have my hard drives on a separate pci controller, dvd as prim master, zip as prim slave, and cdrw as secondary master. That way transfers from dvd to cdrw do not interfere. Remember, data can only go one way on a cable, so putting a dvd and cdrw on the same channel will slow down transfer rates quite a bit.

it's not the 40-pin cables - rom devices don't use ATA 66, they're all ATA 33...

it's something else - most likely your ide bus master drivers or settings...try updating the ide bus master drivers (ie.. 4.29 via ones)...set DMA mode using the 3.0.1.1 bus master tool (but dont' install those drivers)...

On a similar topic, is it normal for Packet writing to take 100% CPU resources? When transfering large files with my Ricoh 8/8/32 to a formatted CD-RW using InCD, RC5 says "100%" which means there aren't any CPU cycles left for RC5 to crack.
