copying files via network neighborhood, system lags

Whenever I copy files (this is mostly noticable on large file copies) the computer that I am transferring from lags up as soon as a transfer is started. This is worse when using windows explorer, but it also happens when using ftp to transfer files (connecting to 192.168.0.x ip) I get a rate of abour 400K/sec, 400k isn't that bad but it should still be better than that with a 10bt network.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be, or is this "normal"?

your going to need to give more details, like how your computers are hooked up, what protocols your using and any other pertinant info you can provide.

guess adding the protocols would have been a smart idea. tcp/ip of course is enabled on both computers with 2 ips assigned to each nic (dhcp assigned cable modem and local network). ipx/spx is installed for gaming purposes (file sharing over ipx/spx did not work for me) and netbeui is being used for file sharing, I'm using two Linksys LNEPCI II nics.
