Copying files from W10 pc hard drive using linux ?

• My Windows 10 PC is hoplessly stuck in " preparing for repair " bootloop. None of the simple fixes I have found on the web seem to work so I will have to reinstall the OS. Before I do that , I am trying to copy some data files on an external drive using a Pupply Linux Live CD ( drag and drop files ) but am getting an error message - Read only file system error. How do I make it happen ? - Thanks

Haven't used that specific distro, but, all you need to do is allow writes to the drive, no idea why it doesn't do that automatically, maybe it is a feature, or protection or could also be it detected a partition error (or...or...)
Can't really tell with the minimal info you gave.
Usually, I tell people to use a Ubuntu live CD/DVD since it is much easier for windows people to figure things out.

Chances are, you had an unclean Windows' shutdown, so the volume is flagged as "unclean", so Linux mounts it as read-only. You need to force-remount read-write.

1. An Ubuntu 16.10 Live DVD worked on copying the smaller directories to flash drive. However copying the larger ones seem to bog down ( transfer rates going way down from few Mbs to a Kbs and didn't seem to finish (flash drive had more that enough capacitiy) . What is that all about ? Memory issue or what ?

Flash drive hooked up to USB 2 or 3? What brand flash drive is it?
I know there are a TON of USB flash drives out there that have pathetic write speeds.

Before you do a full reinstall, have at look at the info in this link .. other people have had the issue as well and you can fix it.
