Copying DVDs and PS2 games...

Ok before anyone gets morally down on me, I'm only curious here, I'm not about to do anything ok?

I was looking through newegg and saw blank DVD-rs for $3. Does that mean that if you had a DVD burner (getting cheaper every day now) and some blanks and you ripped a commercial DVD then you could just burn it onto the blank and have a perfect copy for $3? If not why not?


Also, seeing as people have managed to rip DVDs is it now possible to rip PS2 games? I know that pirated games already exist but I'm wondering if it's possible for the average user with a little knowledge to rent a PS2 game and rip it?

Commercial DVD-R media holds 4.7GB of data per side (for dual sided discs). That works out to about 120 minutes of movie. The VAST majority of DVD's are longer than that (No more than 4.7GBx2 though) and burn on Dual Layer DVDs (which hold 4.7GBx2 on one side). Since you can't buy dual layer burners now, you're kind of out of luck if you want to make perfect copies of DVD movies, unless the entire DVD is smaller then 4.7GB (or it's on two sides of a disc, like some older ones are). And the older DVD's (that are split onto two sides of a DVD disc) are usually missing the extras and/or higher quality sound (DTS tracks, etc).

As far as ps2 games, the only one I've looked at in my PC's DVDRom drive is GTA3, and it's under 4.7GB. But, you still have to mod your ps2 (which isn't easy, although newer mod chips are) and swap out disks with a gameshark (unless you get the chip that doesn't need it, but it's like $80, plus there's like 30 solder points, which makes it extra hard to install).
