whichever format that would fit onto a 700mb would work for me.

I've used DVD2SVCD previously for this exact purposes. Your desktop DVD player must be able to play the SVCD format, and I got the best results by backing a single movie to 2 - 700mb CDs.

Why not back up your movies to DVD? DVD burners are about $60, and blank DVD-R can be found for about 50 cents each.

If you use DVD Shrink, you'd have much better quality than a SVCD, and you can watch them in any DVD player.

It seems silly today to even think about using CDs as a backup media for movies.

I asked a similar question a couple of weeks ago... was recommended Fair Use Wizard(have it encoding right now as a matter of fact).. awesome software. they have an LE edition or pay 10 euros for full edition.

Only difference is that they LE edition will only let you max out the file size at 700Mb(just the right size for CD).

it encodes to Divx and Xvid. It has worked like a charm on 95% of my DVDs. After a couple of weeksm, I decided to plop down the 10 euros for full version.

I wanted this because I had some DVDs I that I didn't want shrunk down so much.

Putting a dvd movie on a cd turns it into about the same as vhs quality. VCDs are fine in my opinion for copying vhs tapes and will play on most stand-alone players. I don't think you will like the quality of a dvd transferred to a cd though.
