Copying a primary partition

Hello,

I'd like to copy my primary partition (W2k) from one hard drive to another using DriveImage 4.0 (came with my Soltek mobo). However, the documentation says I might have a problem with boot.ini after the transfer. It suggests I download the utility ntfsini.exe from the powerquest website to fix any potential problems just in case.

Well, of course powerquest is no more, and I can't find anything about the utility on symantec's site. Does anyone have it, or know where I can find it? I have not been able to turn it up in 30 min of googling.

Or - if I can't find it, how would I deal with boot.ini problems if they occur?

Or - should I just get Ghost? Or even another app?

Thanks!

I personally have found that not of those apps work that well. Sure yes you can move the partition over, but at what cost? 99% of the time the partition will move but with problems.

What is on the Partition that's so important??

I would just backup whatever data you need off of the partition and then start with a fresh install of W2k, then copy the data you have backed up to the new install.

Howdy,

You are right, of course, the ideal is to start with a fresh install. I guess I was dreading reinstalling and customizing all my apps, drivers, etc.

Right now, I have all my personal data (docs, pix, etc.) on a separate drive, but all my apps and games installed to my primary partition. I read somewhere that I should put apps in their own partition and games in a third. If I did that, would they still work if I reinstalled windows? Or would their installations be "broken" if the registry is wiped and I'd have to reinstall them all again anyway?

What's the best way to do this?

Thanks!
