Copy my car

Fast forward a few years and my 2006 car is getting old and its time I get a new one. I liked my car so much that I copied it. Meaning I took it apart piece by piece and retooled an identical part. Using those parts I built a "new" 2006 copy. I would never sell my old car or the "new" one I built.

Other than it being expensive, would this be illegal?

What's to prevent me from hand tooling a rolex (if I had the ability) for my own use? My understanding is that it is not illegal until I were to sell it.
yup, its basically a Kit Car.

This subject is WAY too deep and esoteric for me.

that's easy, people do that with homemade trailers all the time. The DMV will give you forms to fill out. I did it myself with a homemade utility trailer. I made out of angle iron and an axle from an old camper.

I see what you did there. I see nothing wrong with that, though some lawyers might get uppity about it. The Sony quote is preposterous.

As for cloning a car as one human being with a tool shop, there are tens of thousands of parts in a modern car, many of which cannot be fabricated without very expensive equipment. Particularly heinous would be trying to work with aluminum for the motor, the equipment needed to make cpu dies, and so on.

Your analogy is stupid. And her statement is too ambigious to judge, but it's probably inaccurate. Actually it's not inaccurate, because they could say you stole the song, but they'd be wrong.

Are you sure Cars are not copyrighted? Seems to me they would be otherwise you would see Toyota F150's out there.

Patented and I'm sure the logos would be copyrighted. But nothing stopping you from building a car from scratch and registering it to drive on public roads.

Well I am not really pitting them against each other, I just said it was inspired by not versus.

A trailer is not a car.

Not sure about the DMV, but here our MTO (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario) makes this procedure as hard and long as possible.

It wouldn't be illegal. You could even drive it, registered as a kit car.

Wow, so I've been stealing songs since I was in grade school... copying our LPs onto cassette tapes so I could listen to them on my Walkman.

Wonder what the fine would have been back then if they took you to court?

Well we're talking about two different entities here then aren't we? How do you know how easy it is in my country/state? STFU, I wouldn't pretend to know what Canadian law is.

Yeah, it seems like here as long as they're going to get taxes from you, they don't care what it is.

That quote is beyond stupid, I hope the lawyers and bigwigs at record companies don't actually believe crap like that.

I will continue to "steal" music by copying my legally purchased CDs to my MP3 player, laptop, etc.

If cars are patented, then you'd be violating the patents on the cars. I assume cars or at least their parts are patented. Plus, now their software is probably copyrighted.

What is a patent? A patent is the government telling a company that it has the legal right "to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling" the invention in that country. Quoted from the USPTO.gov website.

That is, if any part of that car is patented in the country that you are planning to make the part, then you have violated that patent. You certainly can keep making the parts, but if the company or companies find out then they can sue you for patent infringement. You'll have little to no defense. Same goes with whatever country you USE your copy in. Even if you made it legally (such as in a country without patent protection), you can't even use the copy legally in countries with patent protection.

You'd be violating laws AND the US Constitution (if you do it in the US). See Article 1, section 8.

Ease up dude, he didn't pretend to know what the law is in your country/state. He specifically said he doesn't know. He just made the very valid point that a trailer and a car are quite different things, so it's likely that the requirements are different for each.
