I originally have problems using slackware 8 with my new graphics card (ati radeon aiw) and my flatpanel (planar 17.4"). It would shutdown monitor when KDE started and turn it back on when KDE quit.

Now I installed mandrake 8.2 and the monitor works fine. Can I just copy the XF86Config file from mandrake and use it in slackware, hopefully fixing my original slackware problems? Or is the problem deeper than just my settings?

Yea, you can do that..although I'm not sure if it will fix the problem though. Give it a shot. XFree is standard across the distros, so as long as the versions aren't completly different (XFree86 3 uses a different config file format than XFree86 4 does), it will work fine.

Slackware 8 uses Xfree 4.1. which doesn't support Radeon. I hope upgrading to 4.2.0 isn't too dificult..

I guess that's the 8500 AIW? Yeah, that may not be supported in XFree86 4.1. The older Radeons are though - my 64MB VIVO works fine in Slack 8, though the auto-configuration did a crappy job and required some hand editing. Just using XFree86 -configure didn't set my modes properly and tried to run my monitor at too high a resolution - that may be why your screen is blanking. Try copying your settings from Mandrake first - it might work OK. If it is a 4.1 vs. 4.2 problem, you can get a Slack package for 4.2 here. But whatever you do, definitely don't lose Slack!

Nope, it's only a Radeon AIW. Not the 8500 AIW. Which graphics card did you pick in the xf86config? I couldn't even find an option for the Radeon. XFree86 -configure ? Is that another way to configure it?

Unfortunately copying the settings from Mandrake didn't work. I'll just try to install Xfree86 4.2 tonight and see how that goes.

Hehe... well, like I said, the configuration programs are not very helpful with this card. And, at least in 4.1, the document on configuration was "as yet unwritten." What I did was pick another ATI card in xf86config - any version that uses the "ati" driver should basically work. It will ask you for your video RAM, but will auto-comment the line for that because it doesn't match the entry in the card database. No prob, just uncomment the VideoRam line, make sure that the config file indicates that you should use the "ati" driver, and all should be well. After I got the basics working, I compared my file to one generated by XFree86 -configure (the new school configuration proggy) and figured out what new modules, fonts, and stuff the old file left out. Everything works like a charm now, though I haven't bothered to properly set up DRI.

PM me with your email address if you want a copy of my config.
