It's a USB2.0 drive plugged into a 2.0 port, but the transfer is TERRIBLY slow - it takes hours to transfer a couple of gig. Also most of the time, it will eventually get a "Delayed write failed."

Is there anyway to actually get the speed of the transfer? And also how would I start to diagnose / fix something like this?

I did a bit of searching on Google and it seems the 'Delayed write failed' error might pop up if the drive is almost full as is stated here.

Sounds like the USB HDD isnt getting enough power. (When these drives are under powered then they just do not work well.) Either try a shorter cord or use one of the cords that have the double USB connector that is able to supply more current. I suspect that such a cord came with the USB HDD.

If you can, run it thru a powered hub. If the drive is a 3.5, it should have its own power source. 2.5-in drives often require connection to two USB ports, or . . . a powered hub.
