On Sunday, when addressing the media on the Sandy Hook massacre, Lt. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police warned that anyone posting "misinformation" on the case was committing a crime, and would be investigated "statewide and federally, and prosecution will take place." While it's easy to understand his anger and frustration, any legal action against Internet trolls is unlikely to hold up under the U.S. Constitution, experts say.

freedom of spee..lol. :\

Didn't read the link but the police could be referring to malicious postings that are meant to mislead and waste police time.

yes, use every available tools, but don't be a fool and fall for every thing you read on the internet.

btw, is the 2nd part of your comment a thinly veiled personal attack against someone? :\

LEO has to checkout out every piece; only in 20/20 hindsight is it known that the info is worthless.

How can a post in P&N be a personal attack if referencing OT():)
Now if one was paranoid or guilty; they might take affront by making a leap of faith.

How is this different from what politicians do? They spread misinformation all the time. Our liar in chief should be investigated.

Just like yelling fire in a crowded theater is not considered free speech, nor is making up information about leads in a case or falsifying evidence. Fake facebook or twitter posts could be considered evidence or false evidence.

Maybe Lt. Vance is setting up a case against Faux News for misidentifying the shooter.

Heh when are they going to head into the newsrooms of the MSM and start the arrests??

THIS. I cant think of one major news agency that didnt report incorrect information on this. Its kind of the nature of the beast but sheesh. Chill out Lt. Vance.

Actually the cop might be right. Under the Patriot Act aren't things that can be considered to spread fear or apprehension or to interfere with pretty much any type of normal functions fall under the act as terrorism?
