Clearly she had it coming, I know I would be terrified of an old woman on oxygen in her bed making 'threatening gestures'. The police in both of our countries are getting more and more out of control, something (other than them investigating themselves) needs to be done.

I for one am heavily for the idea of separate civilian bodies handling the investigations. I also think the police should be held to a higher standard of the law, and maximum sentences should be applied, or at least a 50% increase in punishment.

I'd agree with your comments. As law enforcement agents, police have more power, and should thus be held to a higher standard. This is another absurd example of incompetent police choosing the easy way out.

There is a big sea change between calling 911 to get a medical emergency technician to getting 10 cops at your door seemingly pumped up to kick some ass.

So I have to wonder what the 911 operator told or did not tell the cops to get this kind of
initial expectation is the minds of the police.

I have a hard time believing any excuse for the apparent brutality displayed by the police.

Still, it would be interesting to hear their excuse, beyond just "threatening posture". If that's the end of their tale, throw the lot of them in jail.

Are you for or against tazing at will?

Nobody is for tazing at will, Dave.

But, yes, I do think the use of tazers is abused/over-used by a sub-group of lazy/ill-trained cops.

As for this story, it certainly looks AWFUL on the face of it, but as noted in a link in the OT thread, "The El Reno, Oklahoma newspaper reports that the woman threatened the officers with a knife and threatened to kill herself. "

I don't know, I wasn't there, but it is possible that the woman was out of her mind with senile rage, and yet fragile enough that the officers thought they might injure her, breaking some easily breakable bones, for instance, in trying to get that knife away from her.

Remember, she was also threatening to kill herself. So, lunging for the knife might have caused her to knife herself.

Again, I don't know and neither do you.

Frankly, the little piece about them standing on her oxygen tube sounds like it came from the distraught young boy who was so distraught at the way his granny was behaving that he called 911!

And, don't you think there's MORE to this story just by the fact that they sent TEN officers to respond? Either the situation was even initially more dire and alarming than the story indicated and/or that woman/household had a history of violence/threatened violence/disruption also not mentioned.

Departments simply DO NOT send ten officers to routine calls for "helping my granny."

Again, again, I don't know the whole story and neither do you.

She threatened to bite him with her dentures, right? Or maybe she tried to swing the oxygen bottle at him? Gimme a break. Perhaps it's time to increase standards in police hiring.

I can appreciate that it was a tense situation, but didn't they think that maybe tazing would KILL her because of her old age / possible poor condition?

Link to Police Report. According to the Police, she had a kitchen knife and kept telling them she would kill them like she killed "Japs" in WWII.

In this incident the police report rings true. The police officer acted very profesional in getting the situation under control. The grandmother could have very easily of been shot by threatening a police officer with a knife. The police have before abused people with a Taser. However in this incident the tasering was warranted and alloweed the office to resolve the situation without resorting to deadly force.

+1 for me.:D

Keep in mind that the court house news is from the lawsuit , filed by a LAWYER looking to make some $$. If I were he then my spin would be as damaging as possible, like the story. This was out on Friday and, at that time, Drudge was the only news group to post it. Still isn't out much there so I'll take a wait and see for the "facts".

Yup ---- big lack of critical thinking all around.

Same thing happened in Charlotte a few years ago. A paraplegic in a wheel chair was threatening to kill himself (in his own home) with a shot gun. The guy's doctor called in the police.

The police busted into the house, were 'threatened' in some manner by the man in the wheelchair with the shot gun ...

So they shot and killed him.

lolololo. As the population becomes dumber and dumber the police will do more stupid shit. I fear the police not because I do anything wrong I just know it doesn't require a good brain to get into a police force.

Pay the police better than their shitty wages, and you will have less shitty people willing to do the job. A good friend of mine is a cop, and the amount of crap he has to deal with on a daily basis versus the amount of money he gets paid makes me question his sanity sometimes. And he has a masters degree too!

How about we start by demilitarizing our police departments?
