You'd think a "collector" would have a permit. I'm not familiar with NJ permits, but IL has a general license to own and buy ammunition for a fire arm and a separate conceal and carry permit. I'm wondering which one this man needed?
Permit, ammo license... Sad state of affairs.

I don't disagree with any of what you are saying. But the problem is people are morons and sometimes we make laws to protect the rest of society from them. Is it stupid to treat this the same as if the gun was a Glock? Yea. Is it the right thing to do? Well its making people aware that you can't keep a gun in your glove box. Should the law treat these guns different than modern guns? I don't know.

All this guy had to do was check the law. I do it on a regular basis if I have even a bit of doubt. If we don't follow the law, we are criminals.

You can't possibly know all the laws on the book in even the very small area of the country that you reside in much less all the towns, counties and states that you might travel through. Sure you might know the gun laws, I damn sure do, but the bottom line is there are hundreds if not thousands of bullshit laws even your judges aren't aware of.

If you look hard enough you will find that every single last one of us, including judges who are paid explicitly to know the law, are criminals. You and I both know that the judge should have thrown this shit out regardless of the letter of the law and I'm a "black letter law" type of person. The only other argument in my mind is that part of this laws intent was to get people like in the OP off the streets because they are a danger to society and I refuse to believe that anyone is stupid enough to believe this person was a danger to society. Perhaps I am being naive but I have a sliver of hope left.

I know you are right but I can't bring myself to defend someone who didn't follow the gun laws especially one that makes sense. Gun ownership comes with responsibility and this guy was not being responsible. I know this was a relic gun but I've had it ingrained in my head that a gun is a gun.

Maybe I'm just too safety crazy to be objective on this one.

My grandpa quite literally beat gun safety into me starting at a young age and I learned very quickly. The last time I screwed up I was 11 or 12, it was hunting season and 4 of his hunting buddies were at the farm. One of the buds had recently purchased a new revolver and he handed it around the table. I watched the guy next to me check the chamber and I could see for myself that it was in fact empty. It was then handed to me and I proceeded to finger fuck it without checking the chamber.

I was on the ground before I even knew I was getting my ass whooped. I have not made that mistake since.

With all that said, we all know that this guys life shouldn't be ruined over this nonsense. The judge knows it, the police know it, the DA knows it, you know it and I know it. The fact that, even if the charges eventually get dropped, that this poor bastard will have to endure the shitstorm he is in for just isn't conscionable in my opinion.

Went on va-ca in NC last year. Called 2 different county sheriff depts and they both told me I was good carrying in the glove/console because I had a ccw.

Wrong.

Not making excuses for any guy taking a gun in NJ.

I'm actually hoping the DA uses prosecutorial discretion and drops the charges. But you have to remember that the cops didn't arrest this guy at first. They let him go and gave it to the DA (or PA) to decide what to do.

Hrmm...you interrupted my cop hate with a great point. They actually did appear to use their discretion. If that's true, then good on them (except for maybe bringing the DA into it...but really good on them for not making the immediate arrest). But you won't interrupt my DA hate!!!! BAD DA!
