BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A California deputy shot and killed a former running back for the Cincinnati Bengals in front of a convenience store after he allegedly hit an officer with a bag holding two cans of beer.

Really?

I mean... yeah... he assaulted a police officer so techinically all bets were off but really... pull a firearm instead of the tazer? Baton? Pepper spray? Two cops can't subdue a guy on a simple assault?

Hit a cop in the back of the head trying to flee custody...supposedly multiple priors...hard to say what the situation called for, though it wouldn't surprise me if it were excessive.

Also, lol.

Alcohol kills thousands of people every year, they did the right thing in not taking a chance.

lol that's ridiculous.

sorry, he shoulda been tasered or subdued somehow. they're cops... they're trained to do that first. he posed no threat to their lives.

A huge motherfucker wielding an object that weighs a few pounds at someones head is not a threat?

99% of the time I side with the cops. But every once in a while something like this comes up and fails the smell test for me.

I just see this as a total fail on the cops part. I could see them not facing any penalty for it and since there was an assault on a police officer I wouldn't be surprised or particularly disappointed... but... trigger happy is a word that comes to mind.

Sounds about right. Happened right in front of a convenience store, so hopefully there's footage.

Why do people often want the cop to take too much of a risk?

A swinging bag with 2 cans of beer in it is a weapon capable of major injury.

No shit. You could easily kill someone with a single swing. If he got another swing off, it's extremely likely lethal or permanent damage could have been inflicted. The deputy is very lucky he didn't suffer a lasting injury from the first swing. Shooting him was the right call unless he dropped the bag and immediately threw his hands up in the air or something after he swung it.

yeah, what if the impact disarms the officer. Then the suspect (i guess it's dead guy now) could have potentially used it against the officer and then shoot other people.

Indeed, a sling with smaller rocks can be fatal. You can hit someone in the head hard enough with a swinging bag and (unopened) cans of beer to kill them.

Deadly force is to counter an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury. Are you saying that getting hit on the head with a hard object does not have the capability to cause serious injury, or are you unfamiliar with general guidelines regarding the use of force?

This...you don't counter hard blows to the head with pepper spray. WTF.

doesnt read well, but not sure what people expect. laying out a deputy with a blow to the back of the head?

feel bad for the family, and the deputy for being put in that situation

the story is weird.. i would like to see the video.

but those saying 2 cans in a bag wouldn't hurt are nuts. though i would preferred them to taze him. but off the story i can't fault the cops.
