Cops on cell phones...wtf

So I live in NY and talking on your cell phone while driving is illegal. I see a lot of people around here violating this law and I have myself a couple of times, but I at least use my speaker phone, even though it's not technically hands free because I have no cradle for the phone.
Lately I've been noticing cops in their police cars talking on cell phones. Not just speaker phone mode and they're holding it in their hand, but with the phone up against their ear. Its starting to piss me off. They will give you a ticket for doing this yet they do it themselves and think nothing of the fact that they are endangering other motorists. Not too mention as officers shouldn't they be the role models? You're enforcing these laws, maybe you should obey them?
Now before you try and tell me oh they are probably police issue phones and they using them in their official capacity, then why aren't their cars equipped with hands free systems then? What if they are on the phone and get a call over the radio to respond to a crime in progress? They're going to be juggling that stupid cell phone, reaching for the lights and siren switches at the same they are accelerating to above the speed limit. Sure you could say they've had more driving training for high speed/high pressure situations but last time I checked the police academies are not training cops to do high performance manuevers with a cell phone in one hand.
Anyway, just curious what any of our resident ATOT officers think of this.

all jokeing aside. the OP does have a point. the cops should be fallowing the law while they are upholding it.

At least in CA, there are provisions in the law that allow law enforcement to do this as long as it is work-related (but who could ever check?).

Actually, I'd love to see cops' accident rates per mile driven. They are the single most-distracted drivers on the road, with radio, cell phones, laptops, all those extra controls to deal with, all kinds of stress each day, always looking out the side windows to see stuff as they go by. They never use their turn signals, they always speed, they tailgate and weave around. I'm not hating on them here, but no wonder they all seem to be such shitty drivers.

nothing really do to with this thread, but i saw a cop almost t-bone another car the other day. he was literally an inch or so from the car. he was pulling out of a gas station which, admittedly, has a very shitty view of oncoming traffic from this exit/entrance.

I'm not a cop hater. I know and appreciate that cops put their lives on the line for us ever day to protect and serve. They work a job that I would never want to do for what we pay them. At the same time though, we're also giving them the power to enforce the laws enacted by our government and with that power a lot of trust and faith that they will do what's right. I guess I get a little nervous when it starts looking to me like officers might be using that power to pick and choose which laws they feel like obeying themselves.

Where's that story with the pictures of the cop getting parking tickets or something like that?

I'm thinking that you need better formatting of your post to make it clearer and easier to read.
Cutting out some fat would help too.

Next thing you know, they'll be integrating cell phones and tazers!

That would be epic. Instead of getting a ticket people can get their head shocked.

I trust a cop more, sorry. If you have some severe complex about it, you can always call it into the Mayor's or Chief-of-police office and let them slap him on the wrist.

And you know what happens when they crash? They can look up the phone records and get in trouble just like anyone else.

But they use their phones for "business" and to keep in touch with wife/husband mainly. Believe me, if something goes down, the phone is dropped immediately.

They use them all the time for information that they do not want to broadcast where it is likely to be heard.

I think jpeyton's cop abuse alarm's been broken for the past week. I've paged him at least 3 times and he never showed up. Slacker.
