KSDK) - A St. George police officer is on unpaid leave after a heated encounter caught on tape. The video is getting thousands of hits on the internet and drawing criticism from around the country. The driver says he just happened to have a camera rolling when he was stopped by police

Brett Darrow swears he doesn't go out looking for trouble. But he says he was assaulted by an off-duty officer in 2005, and then last year received a traffic ticket he didn't agree with. So that's why he had the camera installed in his car. He says he keeps it rolling constantly, just in case trouble finds him.

It was recording early last Friday when Darrow entered a commuter parking lot in the small St. Louis County town of St. George. He says he was there to meet a friend about 2 a.m., when an officer pulled in behind him.

Darrow says, "I asked him what I was doing wrong and that's when he asked me to step out of the car."

That's when he says, the verbal tirade began. It is now posted all over the internet. In one exerpt, Sergeant James Kuehnlein can be heard saying, "Do you want to try me young boy? You want to try me tonight young boy? You want to go to jail for some ******* reason I come up with? You want to see who knows the law better me or you?"

He doesn't stop there. Kuehnlein continues, "Talk back to me again and I bet I can say you resisted arrest or something. You want to come up with something? I can come up with nine things."

At the St. George Police headquarters, the Chief has fielded about 400 phone calls on Monday, most from irate people who watched the encounter online. Chief Scott Uhrig says, "Our officers are trained to be respectful and courteous to all citizens." He adds, "For what I can see, I don't condone the language or the demeanor or some of the things that are actually being said. We don't sit there and say I'm going to make up a charge and ruin your day."

The Chief plans a thorough investigation. Meanwhile the Sergeant remains on unpaid leave.

Redditt Hudson of the ACLU of Eastern Missouri watched the video and says this represents a bigger problem. Hudson says, "He presented himself at some point in this encounter, not as a police officer but as a threat." He continues, "The vast majority of people I know including myself are pro law enforcement but what we do not want is to see that authority abused in this way."

Brett Darrow says he's glad for the attention the tape has received. He hopes it sparks change or at least awareness. He says, "I think people need to know about it and know that this happens."

He does plan to pursue this and says he'll contact the police chief Tuesday morning.

Really, if a cop threatens to arrest you on a made up charge and actually does it, you're pretty much screwed unless there's a video tape w/ audio running. Who's the jury/judge going to believe, you the criminal or the 'law abiding/law protecting angel cop'?

Without "douchebags" like the filmmaker, who would have thought that cops would lie like this? After all, who's the jury/judge going to believe, you the criminal or the "law abiding/law protecting angel cop? People need to do more stings like this on the cops. If the FBI, can do "stings" on local cops, the general population should be able to do stings on the cops. Cops are entrusted with a lot of responsibility by the public, cops should not be able to misuse these responsibility.

When bad cops get removed because of video evidence like this, there will be even more good cops. As the "bad apples" get removed, the public will trust the police officers more. Ultimately, the police officers that remain will be able to do their jobs better because the public will trust them more..

Incorrect. An officer must always be courteous and respectful to the public, regardless of the situation. The only thing that this changes is that officers are more worried about being held accountable through videotaped evidence.

These are the two things the kid did wrong. You don't answer a question from an authority figure with a question. If he had just complied there wouldn't have been a problem. People that are reluctant to give information like this are usually guilty of somthing or are hiding something. Though the cop did lose control, the kid pretty much enabled the situation. For all we know, this cop just got done with a bar fight call or something and was on his last nerve.

Bullshit. Always question authority.

That is insane. Most of my experiences with cops have been relatively good. One cop that pulled me over was a jerk but he didn't threaten to start making crap up on me.

Not only should this cop lose his job but he should be charged with a crime and put in jail.

Have you ever been pulled over by a cop before, I dunno about you, but this is EXACTLY how any cop I have ever dealt with acted, if you say one thing even slightly questioning what they are doing they will go berserk. Ya'll also act like if there was a jury they would convict the kid of a made up crime, I can tell you personally I would never convict someone based on one mans word over another even if one is cop and the other is a punk kid. That having been said, people on these interweb forums seem to waaay overestimate the protection their "rights" give them and such, there are tons of laws that the cop could easily have made a case that he was following in order to detain or arrest this kid. Now that would definitely have been the wrong thing to do, but he could still do it. Also, I don't know how many of ya'll have been in a courtroom, but judges are just as bad (the one where I went to high school was notoriously bad). The judge (black and raised by low income family) would pretty much use every instance someone from my high school (rich 98% white private school) got a ticket as a chance to go off on a rant about rich white kids thinking they were better than everyone else. He was more or less blatantly racist and had a huge power trip. IF a cop came in with charges against some punk ass white kid you can be DAMN sure he would impose the maximum fines and everything. And if you forgot to address him as "your honor" or even remotely talked back it was contempt of court for your ass and even more cr@p headed your way.

Basically many cops and judges are on serious power trips and do NOT like you getting in the way. Part of it I really can't blame them for since they have to deal with alot of people who really DO deserve getting their ass chewed out, but they really shouldn't treat good people who commit some minor traffic violation the same way they do career criminals.

idk, I never really hated cops until I got older and met the type of people who were going into law enforcement. To give you a hint, when I asked them why they wanted to be cops their answers werent like a movie 'my dad was a cop and I want justice'. The answers are typically 'i want a gun and i want power/respect' ummm ya, so the same guys that were douchebags in high school all of a sudden have guns and power to punish anyone they really wish.

edit: also cops often say 'everyone hates us until they need us' I find that statement to be quite untrue, typically if you own a gun that is the only reason you need cops to come help you. I dont own a gun and I am not much of a gun nut but it seems when people call the cops if they had their own firearm they could handle a lot themselves.

I don't give a fuck if the cop was in a bar fight and the kid did provoke it (BTW you can/should ask what you did wrong but yeah he should have given his ID).

a cop can not threaten to make up charges and arrest him for bullshit reasons. the copw as threatening to stick him with 9 charges and resissting arrest even when he didn't do anything. then he lied saying he was speeeding and did nto use a turn single.

It does not matter what the cop went through during the day. it is NO EXCUSE for what he did.

he should be fired. how many other times did he actually arrest someone with made up charges?

If you're resisting questions like that, they will try to get you on anything they can in order to detain you to see what your problem is. Happens all the time. Again, this guy went crazy, totally bad behavior, but I'm saying this type of thing happens all the time. Know what? 9/10 times they're hiding warrants for their arrest.

he has the right to ask what laws he is breaking. he has the right to ask why he has to show ID.

sure you are a dick to the cop he will nail you for everything they can. the majority would not MAKE SHIT UP.

the cop was 100% in the wrong. no matter what happened before or if hte idiot kid asked quesitons. a cop CAN NOT make up charges and threaten him.

the cop should be fired.

The kid was disrespectful. Was he wrong? Yeah. Was he a total jerk like some people can be when they get pulled over? I've seen videos on TV where they show speeders throwing whole fits. Cops threaten that if you do anything worse you will get arrested, but they deal with those idiots, make them sign their ticket and go. They even let them drive off tires screeching.

I mean sure the kid was disrespectul and could've been nicer, but you think the cop would've turned into a total angel if the kid handed him the ID? Sure the cop would then point out maybe in a nicer fashion that the kid never signaled or whatever, which then the kid would protest to and then you would jump right back into the swearing and attitude issues. In the end the cop will still go berserk, just maybe choosing a different time to go crazy.

There we go, thanks Fritzo! You even attempted to mitigate the cop's behavior by claiming the cop was upset about other things, just like I said someone would. Congrats!

Your attitude of "people who are reluctant to give information" is what gives police states power. "Why do you want privacy if you have nothing to hide" and so on. Not only that, the kid wasn't "reluctant" to give anything, he simply asked why he'd been pulled over.

"You don't answer a question from an authority figure with a question" Whatever, that's wrong. This cop shouldn't BE an authority figure. Just because he's a cop means that you have to instantly cow to his every whim, huh? Good luck with that Fritzo.

The kid didn't enable this situation. The cop being an out of control psychopath who threatened to invent charges to intimidate and harrass an inncocent citizen did. It's people like you that the 99% of cops who are good at their job should hate. Your constant defense of indefensible idiots like that cop simply because "they're an authority figure" is pathetic.

I have some serious doubts about the "truthfulness" of this video. I have seen actual footage of police in similiar situations so I have to accept the possibility. At the same time I wonder how many other recording this kid has, where he was stopped and the police were polite and did their job, regardless of how he acted. Combined with that, how easy would it be to dub over the audio portion, since the portion i listened to only had audio and the flashing lights, but never actually showed the kid and the officer?? Or does that portion come at the end of the video? Are we actually listening to an authentic stop, or a decent audio/video edit job?

Most police record all their traffic stops now, and only a real idiot would be that verbally abusive, knowing that everything he said was on tape and if requested, that his commanding officers would review the tape and have some serious questions. More then 1 officer has been fired for overstepping the line.

I've said it before, if you really want to try and understand it from the police point of view, ask to go on a ride along with them for a night. Most of them enjoy the company and it will let you see how it feels to approach a car at night, understanding that a high percentage of officer shootings occur as the officer approaches a vehicle.

..............naw, most people would prefer to complain in ignorance.

but douchebags like the filmmaker just make it harder for the overwhelming majority of cops

Care to back up that statement? What'd the kid do to be a douchebag? The only things he even had time to do before the cop went psycho on him were

A) Ask (politely, I might add) what he'd done wrong.

B) Record the whole thing

You can't argue against B since if he hadn't, the idiot cop would still have a job right now. If you think it's a douchebag move to dare to ask what you got pulled over for when you know you did nothing wrong (which this kid didn't) then you're, well, I won't say stupid. Opionated.

Of course! Brilliant! It's all a giant conspiracy!

First of all, the cop wouldn't have gotten put on unpaid leave if this video was that obviously faked. Secondly, since the kid didn't do anything wrong, why'd the cop have him get out in the first place? The kid wouldn't have been able to get out of the car without the cop telling him to, and the cop had no reason to.

You're pathetic. You're desperately inventing some scenario that keeps your precious police officer in a blameless, holy light, rather than simply believing the FAR more likely fact that the cop was simply a power tripping douchebag.

lol from the intensity of your responses, i think there are some personal issues here also.

as i stated, i have seen similiar situations, so i accept that they happen. that the officer was placed on leave, goes along with my statement that other officers have been fired for over stepping their boundries. so i can disregard your reference to a conspiracy, i already said that it has happened in the past.

police are supposed to be immune to rude behavior, and should just ignore it. some don't. i've seen some officers just let it slide off, and other times their responses are much more abrupt. at the same time i've seen kids do some very stupid things and laugh at the joke, then wonder why they are suddenly in hand cuffs and being searched.

and i still recommend that people go on the ride alongs to get the cops' perspectives. especially people with personal issues.

and yes, i still question the kid's video and the cop's actions, until the whole story comes out.

All I know is that the kid is gonna be targeted like a mofo by all the local cops from now on.

They'll know he has a camera and be nice to him, but they'll pull his over any chance they get.

So where is this mythical police recording? Or has it magically disappeared like most police recordings seem to do?
