Cops and radar detectors?

I was wondering if radar detectors piss off cops or not (generally speaking that is)..... Say I get pulled over - should I attempt to hide it or mount it out of sight?

Always wondered this too...

Though I figure if they see me fumbling around in there after they pull me over, they're gonna think I'm reaching for something. Or worse, hiding something illegal (use your imagination). It can get pretty bad.

My girlfriend got pulled over the other day after dropping me off at work. She was driving my car which has a radar detector in it, but it never went off. I am assuming he did not have radar on since he came up from behind her.

He basically told her that he gives tickets to anyone that he pulls over that has radar detectors. Of course he only issued her a warning, but had I been driving I would have gotten a ticket.

Cops don't like people scrambling to hide (or perhaps get to? they don't know) something under the dash or seat while they are walking up to a car they just pulled over.
Just leave the detector where it is and don't even mention it or think about it. If you don't think it's a big deal, neither will he. They're not illegal (in most states), and he popped you anyway right?

also illegal in CT and Canada.

cops have radar detector detector in their cars, of course the high end models (like valentine1 and bell) can detect radar detector detectors ;) haven't gotten a ticket since owning a valentine. of course i rarely speed either, just like to know where those donut boys are hiding :D

Yeah, since I look like a terrorist (especially when I forget to shave) I usually just place my hands on the wheel and remain totally still with the windows open.. Hiding something/moving something's a bad idea - but I wonder if I should just mount it low / out of sight..They're not illegal where I live but I can imagine that they really piss off cops (I would hate for it leading to me getting searched for "suspicious" activity)..

My guess is that if cops see a detector of any kind, they automatically categorize as one who speeds and thinks they can get away with it. So I could see where they would feel they had to "teach a lesson." However, my one buddy defies all logic....he got pulled over 8 times last year in his cavalier with a detector and only himself in the car (wife and kids at home). Did he get a ticket? No! I have gotten two tickets and no warnings. I guess I get the merciless, power-trippin, or just plan bored officers. I thought it was generally accepted that you could speed a little on deserted interstate in perfect weather...my bad...I guess... <end mini-rant>

one of my classmates did something pretty nifty. he took apart his radar detector and molded it into his dash right under his stereo...so it looks like part of the car. you don't even know he has a detector there....it looks pretty sweet.

I'm a habitual speeder. I got a ticket almost every time I was pulled over when I had a detector. I have not gotten a ticket since I got rid of it.

Take from that what you will.

It's legal in CT now. As of 1999 actually.

how does it detect the radar if the unit is under the radio?

Same way it does when it's anywhere else in the car. :p

I thought radar bounced off cars, but went through glass.

That is sad..."since I look like a terrorist"..I hate how people pigeon hole others! :|

From what I understand they have to be next to glass to work...since glass is not reflective...but if you put it underdash it would bounce off of the metal.

as for it working "not next to glass" it really depends if it is X radar or K Ka laser I believe... X is much easier to pick up, it bounces all over the place.

As for mounting it in the dash, simply stick the optical reception piece (or whatever it is really called) up near the top of the dash near the window, and it has no problem picking it up the same as if the whole unit was up there..... just make sure you have a clear view to the back window, otherwise they can sneak up on you and pace you with radar easily.
