Cops find stolen Krispy Kreme truck, then eat evidence
Associated Press
December 3, 2004 K

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Police followed a trail of doughnuts to find a stolen Krispy Kreme delivery truck.

``It has a happy ending,'' Swatara Township Sgt. Robert Simmonds said. ``The evidence was brought back to the police station, and the cops are eating the doughnuts.''

It was 12:45 a.m. Thursday when Krispy Kreme deliveryman Tim Trostle stopped at a Swatara Township convenience store and left the engine running as he made the delivery. Someone fled with the truck, but since Trostle had left the back doors open, police were able to follow a trail of doughnuts.

The doughnut trail ended before long, but police in a nearby township found a doughnut cart near the Harrisburg city line. City police found the truck near a downtown bar.

No arrests were immediately made. The truck was returned to the company.

Although Simmonds had been joking about police taking the contents of the truck, he acknowledged seeing Krispy Kreme doughnuts in a station conference room Thursday.

``I suspect that the manager from the Krispy Kreme might have given us a little thank you for our efforts,'' he said.

Origin of the stereotype:

Dunkin Donuts was the first nationwide business to offer free coffee to Police, so it was common to see them stop in during breaks.

No Officers I know have ever eaten donuts on duty, and I work for a decent-sized municipal agency.

The only people at my department who ever eat donuts are the administrative personnel. I never see officers eating donuts.

Free coffee abound, but no donuts. Now everywhere offers free coffee...too bad I don't drink it.

From the list of things not to say to a police officer:

Cop: your eyes look red...have you been drinking?

You: no sir...but your eyes look glazed...have you been eating donuts?

I had a member of my family who was an officer (brother-in-law of sister. Fell to cancer this year). He ate donuts only while on-duty just to purpetuate the stereotype - said he liked the laughs. A jolly jelly-eating man was he, but had a monster sh!t-stompin' boot when he needed it.

He actually LIKED it!?

The last thing I want to hear when I walk into a convenience store is some lame donut comment. That or some equally stupid sh!t like "I didn't do it!" or "Better look out, the cops are here to arrest you!" Nobody is original, but they all think they are.

I once saw 3 cop cars in line at a Dunkin Donuts drive-through in PA... according to my friend's husband, though, who's a cop, DD is the only place to get some much needed coffee when you're working at 3 am.

Yes, he actually did like it. I suppose it was because of his size. He'd tell stories of him hearing people snicker much like you suggest but would ignore it. Then he'd approach them in a very menacing fashion to let them know that he was eating donuts and he did like them and asked if the folks had any problem with it. Clayt always relished the meek looks of shame the people had when they realized they were being jerkoffs but were confronted about it.

That sounds like fun, but my department is much too professional to allow something like that to be a regular thing.

Really? There's no difference between them and regular glazed donuts. The gimmick is they they serve them warm. Must just be a problem with donuts.

Brad, I know this is off topic but I'm curious. What are the lamest excuses people have made for speeding or another moving violation?

Here's one: "My daughter's team lost." Meanwhile, the daughter was crying in the backseat.

Oh, and she was doing 50 in a 25.
