do you hve a current mb to use?

If you don't, I would suggest a Asus SocketA mb, with a Duron 600 or 650. You should be able to get 900 out of it.

If you do have a mb you can use, you can get a cB0 650E and o/c to 900+, if your ram can handle it.

mb == motherboard :)
i personally prefer intel cpus
i used to use amd's and i can't stand em because of their instability
but thats my opinion :)

you could always get a celeron 566 and a good motherboard for about 200 bucks and save money

Well, if you can wait a week or so, Durons are hitting the market.

DaBuddha,

I used to feel that way about AMD, but i've had some oppurtinity to play around with athlons and they are very stable, very solid cpu's.

I personally use a p3, but wouldnt' hesisitate to recommend an AMD product to anybody.

ive never tried an athlon before and probably will soon
the amd's i tried were k6/k6-2's
people told me i had a lemon of a cpu but i tried over 5 different cpus + 3 different motherboard combos
one of the worst problems was the agp problems with socket 7 motherboards

Yeah, Super 7 was NEVER a stable platform, it was really VIA's fault, not AMD. Anyway, I say you should go for an Athlon- only because you've only got $300, and Athlons are FAR less expensive than equivalent clockspeed CuMines.

Hope it helps (my Thunderbird 900 arrives Tuesday...),

For a $300 budget, I would also recommend a KT133 mobo (motherboard) and a socketted AMD thunderbird or a duron. You can then overclock the heck out of it and get about the same performance as the *ntel P3s with almost 1/2 the price. I love my 750 classic Athlon overclocked to 1018Mhz. THe price was great too.
