Copper shim needed for Alpha PAL8045?

I just installed one for the first time. I didn't use one. If you follow the directions and take it slow, you shouldn't need one. It was much easier to install than I was expecting. There really isn't a good way to describe how to put it on to make it seem simple. Once yo do it, you realize the worst part was taking out the MB and putting it back in (I had my MB already installed). Some like to get one though as sort of an insurance policy against cracking the core on a $100+ CPU.

I agree with what JameyF said, the mounting method on the PAL8045 makes sure that if you follow the instructions you won't be able to crack the core.

A shim is not needed. Also make sure to use the correct set of washers. If your mobo holes are not really big, throw the shoulder washers away! They can cause your chip to fry if used and your holes are not big enough to support them.

If you don't need the shoulder washers on the MB, use them on the top with a flat washer to get maximum downward pressure on the core(the compression springs will not let you put TOO much pressure). If you need the shoulder washers on the board, use 12 flat washers (3 on each bolt) at the top.Good idea to crazy glue the standoff and bottom nut to the board so you can remove the HSF without having to remove MB-if not glued, the nuts and/or standoffs will loosen with fan removal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't this allow the HS to be overtighened? The botton nut is designed to turn when a certain amount of pressure is made. If you super glue the nut and standoff, this won't work, and yo could overtighten and crack the core.

the bolts that hold the fan on aren't the same bolts that hold the heatsink to the mobo
