A dog is dead, and its owner is alleging trigger-happy police work after a Filer officer shot the animal Saturday outside his home.

Police, however, say the dog was aggressive and had to be put down.

IMO the dog was not threatening at the very least the man could of yelled for the owners to come out and get their dog. If this is indeed a service dog the there was a lot of amount of time and money to train him. Do you think he needed to shot the dog or should the owner sue the police.

Warning the video below is graphic

What are multiple, aggressive, "large" dogs doing out loose on the street?
You cannot say they weren't a threat, or were not directly threatening the officer.

Agreed
Those dogs were running lose.
Those dogs could have been a menace to anyone on the street.
It could be argued that there were options such as calling animal control.
The owner of the dogs is an asshole pet owner.

Uhm, as much as it sucks to see that. The dog was very aggressive. I don't see how anyone can say that dog wasn't aggressive. However, I'd think a baton hit or pepper spray should have been tried first before blasting it.

This is from February of 2014. The reason the police were called was because of the dogs running loose. Clearly someone was concerned in the neighbourhood.

They were aggressive and considering they were called because of the dogs in the first place I'm having a hard time being outraged here.

Pepper spray very rarely works on dogs. As for a baton, I'm not sure how effective they would be. I have heard of Tasers being used, but the dogs will immediately resume their aggression when the Tasing stops. I know one officer that held the Taser on a dog that had attacked multiple kids until the battery drained while waiting for Animal Control to get there. He ended up shooting the dog as Animal Control didn't make it there.

I know a rolled up newspaper works wonders on most dogs, so a baton is probably pretty good unless its a feral/fighting dog.

Most those ideas for handling a dog are useful for 1 on 1 scenarios. This was not one of those. If one dog keeps you busy then your neck is exposed to the other.

How trained police handle aggressive dogs.

Meridian (ID) Police Department School Resource Officer David Gomez responds to a complaint of 2 vicious dogs running at large in a residential neighborhood. In 2014, the agency sent 2 officers to the class Defensive Tactics Canine Encounters, which teaches officers a use of force continuum and confidence in less lethal means during canine encounters, while still keeping the officer, innocent bystanders and the public's canine companions from harm. Animal Control Officers were not immediately available. Officer Gomez put to the test what he learned in his department training session. Meridian Idaho PD and Officer Gomez set a high bar for fellow law enforcement officers across the nation.

Wow, that was awesome work.

As far as the OP, dog was definitely acting aggressive. I don't think I would have shot it personally and then the officer was initially a huge dick to the guy whose dog he had just shot. With that said, there were two dogs acting aggressive so it's hard for me to Monday morning QB this one. There are way too many seriously bad shoots to hang your hat on this one.
