Conflicting stories here, would be nice to know what truely happened huh? Of course the cop has a bad track record anyway.

I tend to believe the child's story, as it is not inherent in our nature for us to lie. I wouldn't jump to conclusions though.

It is lucky that it was just a dog and not a person.

I wouldn't judge this guy just for this, without knowing for sure that he's full of it.

Kawa's prior discipline includes an eight-hour suspension for using his left hand to choke a handcuffed prisoner in the back of a squad car, according to public records. An initial review of county court records did not reveal that any of the home's occupants had criminal histories.

EIGHT HOURS???????

WTF?

There have been several cases here (Eugene/Springfield Or.) of cops shooting "attacking" dogs aswell....

If a cop shot my dog, I would FLIP OUT. He would probably have to shoot ME too...

Man, that bleeding heart dad, "we're just a normal family, we don't do anything wrong, we're being picked on by the big mean police! Feel sorry for me!" makes me fscking sick.

If I saw a pitbull come flying at me I would sure as hell blow the damn thing away. There's no way I'd stop and see if he was, "just playing". Especially with a pitbull.

Think about the scenario, and let's put you in the place of the kid.

You are walking out of your house, and your 3 dogs come bolting around the corner of the house. 2 of them stop, but you large, but playful(which you know) pitbull keeps on running like hell towards the cop, not slowing down in the least. The cop sees this thing flying at him, pulls his gun, and caps the dog. You scream like a little girl and go running at the cop, swearing or screaming shaking your fists and attempt to beat the cop down. The cop still hgas his gun out, and plugs you.

Who is wrong here?

I have to agree with you on this one -- it's like the second-guessers here in Seatle after every police shooting saying "couldn't you just have talked nicely to the guy waving the sword / dragging you with his car / firing a gun in the air ??" -and- "racism!" (even if the cop is black).

Damn straight. :D

Now if the dog wasn't 85 pounds, and was just running towards the officer with his tongue hanging out, not really attacking, then the officer was in the wrong. From his story, though, I can see why he shot. I think the family is just blinded by love for the dog and couldn't see that it was a menace.

Sh*t happens and mistakes are made......and yes, I own a dog that I really love. Police have tough jobs. It's life....

A dog will not listen to "stop or I'll shoot".

Seattle? Knee jerk reactions are everywhere. No one thinks any more. It seems that people would rather just bitch about things.

Just ask anyone, they're a victim. Of the police, the schools, racism, age-discrimination, sexual discrimination, or they've been offended by an ad (look at the hunters with the deer ad for the SUV), or some rule.

I don't see how they expect the government to work when they clog it up with all of this crap. They're bringing the real victims down with them.

Yes, I agree. My dad is a cop of 26 years in Illinois, and he has plenty of stores about nasty pitbulls. One time(though this was a 'coworker') this guy gets out of the squad to go up to this guy's house, and a similar thing happens. This pitbull comes flying around the corner, snarling and barking, running towards the cop like a bat outta hell. The cop sees this thing, pulls his gun and shoots twice...missing both times. He goes running back towards his car, with the not-pausing mutt still at his heels, and jumps into his car JUST as the dog makes a flying leap at the car door. The dog proceeded to go ballistic on the car, jumping at his, trying to bite anything sticking out, scratching like mad...

So what?

If Brutuskend's dog had mauled the cop, possibly killed him or scarred him for life, who would the bad guy be then?

yep, you're right about that. i think the cop had reasonable judgement whether or not to shoot "pete the dog". if it were running to him as if to attack, then of course he should shoot it. however, if it was as the boy described, the dog was just walking and showing no signs of threat, the cop was wrong.

mm hmm, those neighbors really are pricks...

i don't know the whole story, and frankly, i'm inclined to side with the cop anyway but most often you can tell if the dog is running at you because it is going to rip your leg off, or it is just excited to see you and wants to run up and greet you.

So much depends on the truth here. If it really was an 85 lb pitt bull, ok, I can see nervousness to the point of shooting the dog. But the family is saying it wasn't a pit bull, and it was only 35 lbs or so. If thats the case, then the cops are probably lying about everything else, including the dog growling and being menacing. And if that cop shot that little girls dog when it was not what he claimed? I hope they sue that prick for everything hes worth. I can't imagine my child having to see her pets head blown off right in front of her. :(

LordMaul,

What if the dog was a 35 lb mut as the owners claim, and not the 85 lb Pitbull the cops are claiming it was? Would you still take their side?

Because if the cops lied about it being 85lbs and a pit, what else are they lying about here?

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Why? If have to sue, at least sue for the value of the dog and for a few hours of therapy. Why ruin this guy's life, and the life of his family, taking food and home from *them* because you lost a damned dog?

The cop, unless you are coming at him with a gun/knife.

How big was the cop. Not all of them are the size of Ohio State Troopers you know.

If the cop felt threatened, thought it was a pit bull, thought it was big enough to hurt him, then this is understandable. More than one pit bull has killed more than one cop.

If I came over to your house and shot your dog right in front of your young daughter, would you settle for just the value of the dog and a couple of hours of therapy as compensation?

If the cops are lying, and the dog was just a 35lb mutt, then there is quite a bit to see here. It is exactly these types of abuses of the public trust that has so many people upset at the police these days...
