Cops need to be able to think quickly and make rational decisions. A wiser decision would have been to call for assistance and then fan out on foot (or use a police tracking dog) on the beach.

How many REALLY smart people do you know that decided to be cops? Cops don't get paid enough or treated well enough for the smarter part of society to become cops. So they cops we have aren't going to be the quickiest or best at making rational decisions.

Yes there are smart cops. Plenty of them, otherwise our detectives wouldn't be able to solve any crimes but just the run of the mill street cops isn't going to be the smartest person in general.

BTW this cops that did this was just a complete idiot.
