Cop pulled me over but didn't write me a ticket

My question: Am I gonna get a ticket in the mail, or did he let me go free?

The story:
Few days ago, I was in downtown Atlanta for some work. On my way back, I took a wrong turn and got caught in a vicious cycle of one-way streets. To add to the trouble, a part of Peachtree St was closed off. Anyway, I finally see a detour sign, take a right turn and suddenly the signs say "I75/I85 N" and "I75/I85 S" with no way out. Well, I thought I might as well go north. I go on ahead and then saw I was merging on the highway from the LEFT. Then I realized what happened... "Fvck, this is an HOV entrance." The next instant, I saw blinkers in the rear-view mirror. "Fvck!!!"

So I pulled over on the side of the on-ramp, pulled out my license, put my hands on the steering wheel.
"Good morning officer."
"Sir, I pulled you over for violation [noise] HOV."
"I know officer. I'm sorry, I was lost and I took a wrong turn."
Then I proceeded to tell him the whole story about me being an idiot and losing my way. I even showed him a printout with a map of downtown roads. He looked at my license in my hand, but he never asked to see it.
"Are you from Atlanta?"
"Yes officer, I go to Tech. I was trying to get back to campus."
"[noise] write you a ticket. Have a nice day."

He then walked back to his car. He never asked for my license or anything else.

I was waiting for him to come back with his pad and write me a ticket. But then he turned on his megaphone/public announce thingy(?). I'm thinking "Fvck, now what? Will he ask me to step out with my hands up?" I was freaked out, but he said "You can go on ahead, driver."

I waved to him and drove off. He followed me until I merged into the HOV and then exited to a normal lane.

Even though I felt he let me off, I'm too skeptical. Maybe I'll get a ticket in the mail?

Possibly he said he would have normally written you a ticket, if noise means that you couldn't hear what he said.
See, this is proof that there are some nice cops. Unfortunately, not many to be found in San Diego.

construction noise from somewhere, so I couldn't exactly hear what he was saying.

I know this post is super-paranoid, but I just wanna be sure he can't write me a ticket just by having my tag number.

If you didn't sign a ticket, then he has no court-admissable record of the occurance and wouldn't even be able to hold it up in court.

Pay it foward.

Dude if a cop pulls you over and mumbles so that you cant hear him you need to call him on that.

You don't have to sign a ticket when you get it. It really depends on what the ticket is for and what state you're in.

Name one state or offense where an officer will stop you, give you a ticket, and not make you sign it.

Crap. I don't think anyone's ever gotten off with a warning before, so you're pretty much screwed.

You should have caught up with him when he was walking back to his car and thrown him your license
