Going 100 mph+ on a 55mph public road before the police escort is not justified even with a wife about to give birth.

I hope someday someone hacks off your arm and you have to get to the ER. Officious bastard.

IT IS EVERYONES NATURAL RIGHT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES!

"[The officer] said, 'Congratulations on your son, and the bad news is that I am going to have to see you in court,'" Coughlin recalled.

The officer drove in front of the Coughlins and guided them safely to the emergency room.
"911 got in touch with him [the trooper], he escorted me the rest of the way to the hospital and then waited in the emergency room while we gave birth and then handed me the ticket," Coughlin said.

GREEDY ASS COPS

If that isn't a sign that traffic cops aren't about making it safer, they are about revenue generation. Period.

Reading comprehension > you

I read the article and I saw the statement that the cop showed up and waited, I just intended it as a comment on my surprise that the cop would seriously wait during labor not knowing how long it was going to take. Hyperbole > you.

Yea you do. My wife went into early labor in the middle of the night. I knew it but she was worried it was a false alarm. So she called our insurance on-call nurse who said the same as me, go to the hospital.
I drove normal and within the speed limit and did not put anybody's life in danager by me driving like an idiot. Early the next day my son was born.

Have you been to New Hampshire? Driving 55 will take a loooong time to get anywhere on the highway.

Cops have the discretion to write a ticket or issue a warning.

People have been giving birth for hundreds of thousands of years in shittier conditions than these people's house, there's no reason to put other's lives at risk in order to get to a hospital. If he was that worried he should have called an ambulance.

110 mph is reckless driving any way you put it. The cop could have been less of a douche by lowering the speed he clocked them at or just not ticketed them at all. It was 3 am after all...how many people were on the road at that time?

So you think 102mph on a dark interstate is safe?

Ever see what happens when a car hits a moose at highway speeds, let alone 102mph? Also, with the fine structure in NH, there's no difference between 26 over and 105 over. Lowering the speed is pointless unless he were to drop it down to 80mph in a 55mph zone.

Yea, you do. They tell you to go to the hospital based on the timing of the contractions. Though sometimes the water breaks without warning, at that point you want to get to the hospital ASAP.

Well for both of my kids we called after my wife's water broke. They even suggested staying home for a couple hours and walking to get things moving before coming in.

With blue lights, siren and a bona fide emergency? Probably.

In a personal vehicle with a pregnant wife? I'd like to think I'd have more sense than that.

ANCHESTER, N.H. -- A Londonderry, N.H., man appeared in court yesterday to face charges of excessive speeding to get his pregnant wife to the hospital.

John Coughlin was found not guilty of speeding as the judge took into account the frantic 911 call made to report his wife was having a baby and was given a police escort at the end of the harrowing 3am trip last September, MyFoxBoston reports.

His wife Angela had their baby Kyle just minutes after they arrived at the hospital.

When asked if he would speed the next time Coughlin said there won't be a next time as there won't be any more babies after their ordeal.

No. Its not that fast at all. 55 mph is a fucking joke of a speed limit on a highway any way, 75 mph is a joke even. It should be 75 where its 55 and 95 where its 75.

This isn't the fucking 70's where cars had drum brakes and couldn't handle worth shit, took twice the distance to brake from 100 mph and didn't even have shoulder harnesses. Yet the speed limit hasn't changed even though safety and the cars technology clearly have.

Now granted, we also need to make getting your drivers license much more rigorous, like the germans do - and not everyone will be able to drive because people are fucking retarded - and old people will lose there license like they should, but those are the breaks.

no, 95 is way too fast.

75 is an entirely reasonable speed limit. (and 5 mph over acceptable overage).

btw, most cars on the road today have at least drum brakes rear.

I agree that the driver was well in the wrong about it. I'm really surprised that the judge didn't at least give him a lesser charge as at a wrist slap.

going over 100mph in a life/death situation at 3 am is ok. wonder if you'd be driving 55mph if you got shot in the face

Going over 100mph at 3am IS a life/death situation. There was no reason for this, that's why EMS exists.

It might not be 105, but on the 91/55/405 people are constantly FLYING by me. I never go above 65, and by how quick these cars are gone from my sight once they pass me, they gotta be doing at least 85. And I'm sure for them there's no pregnant wife, not that it's a great excuse. But it's something at least, these cock goblins I see are speeding for no reason. Speeding's a great source of revenue, so I wonder why the police don't pull more fucks over. In a 20 minute drive on the 55 I see about a hundred tickets the cops could easily give out.

110 in 55. iffy.

That isn't iffy. I don't know about other states, but a few years ago, I was running late to meet my friends to celebrate my birthday (it was actually my on birthday). I was clocked doing 77 in a 55. The cop pulled me over and was very nice and apologetic, but told me they were required to issue tickets if you were going more than 20 MPH+ over the speed limit. I think 25 MPH+ would've landed me in court and I think I probably was going faster than 77, but he was nice enough to knock it down a little. :awe:

which is fine, braking power of discs in front is what matters.

The guy is an idiot. Giving birth is normally not an emergency. My wife was 22 when she went into labor with our first child, at about 3am if I remember correctly. She continued to try and sleep because she knew she'd need her strength, then woke me up around 6am and asked for a light breakfast because she wouldn't be eating for a while.

We then safely drove to the hospital of our choice, 30+ miles away, and arrived something like 8am. She gave birth naturally, without any drugs, at 2:45pm.

If Mr. Coughlin thinks driving 102mph was "necessary" then he's a total asshat.

And any of you who truly believe that in the same situation you would have freaked out or somehow lost control and driven 102mph "without even realizing it." Well, you don't have the mental stability and self-control necessary to drive a car safely. And I don't care what kind of car you drive or how stable it is at high speeds. Turn in your license.
