cop cars...

the main reason cops use Crown Vics is because they are rear-wheel drive American made cars, yes (for the most part)?

well, my local department has started to use Impalas (rear-wheel-drive, American), and for a little while the State Troopers had some Camaros (rear-wheel drive, American)... Why dont they start using Mustangs?

They're cheaper than the other cars they've used, and they can get a hell of a lot more power (power=speed).

Thoughts?

impalas are fwd.

fbodies are faster than mustangs(except the 03 cobra)

they use the crown vic because it's reliable and has the room for everythign they need to carry, as well as comfortable.

some states(CHP i think) used foxbody stangs 10 years ago, so they did use mustangs.

Impalas are FWD. Mustangs are used as much as Camaros around here

they have used mustangs in the past.... back in the 5.0 days

and i thought Impalas are now smaller and FWD?

edit.... also they are using new mustangs in baltimore on I-95 as undercover cops to pull over speeders...

They mostly use em to chase people down on highways.....why they dont use Mustangs compared to Camaros I don't know. Why don't they use Mustangs compared to Crown Vics or Impalas - try stuffing all your police gear in a wannabe 5 seater like a Mustang compared to a large sedan like a Crown Vic.

The new Impalas are FWD.

IMO, most regular duty cop cars should be FWD - they're much easier to drive in all weather conditions. The new Impalas make fantastic cop cars.

You'll start to see more Mustang cop cars since the Camaros are gone. More Camaros were used over Mustangs because they were simply a much faster car.

also, all the cops i know hate the impalas. Too small, fwd, and they are having some teething problems. They much prefer the crown vics(no camaro/mustangs around here, not much use in the winter)
Fast cars are usually only used by highway patrole to catch speeders

I think that stigma that driving fwd cars are much easier in all weather conditions is BS. I drove my open diff crown vic all winter, and with 4 snow tires and my air suspension, i was the only one on the road besides some 4x4's during some of the snow storms we had. The advantage is that with rwd, you can steer the ass end as well as the front, whereas with fwd you have NO control on the rear whatsoever. I'm getting a traction lok installed this summer which will make going around in snow even easier. Cops never seemed to have any problems with it in the winter. The only advantage fwd has over rwd in slippery conditions is the ability to get going a bit better, but using second gear start and traction control makes it just as easy in a rwd car.

There use to be a few cop cars around my neighborhood that were Mustang 5.0's I haven't seen them around lately I guess they retired them.

A few years ago, the CHP was testing out the Jetta as a chase car, of all things. I actually saw pix of one all painted up with the CHP badges and lights on it. I know you can get a decent amount of speed from a stock Jetta if you get the VR6 engine, but that's still odd.

The Escondido PD (Escondido is about 20 miles north of San Diego) used to have a Camaro cop car, but I don't know if they still have it or what.

i only see Impalas and Crown Vics around here... no more Caprices... but the one time i saw a Camaro... that thing came out of nowhere and was just flying down the shoulder... :Q

Oh, on another thought, my dad did have to replace the clutch in a car the local police force were testing out.

Need I say any more than my dad's a Ralli-art trained Mitsubishi technician

*Cough*EvoVI*Cough*

Confused

Milwaukee has Vics, Camaros, Impalas, Neons, and Mustangs. Those are what I've seen out in the past 6 months.

I have a Crown Vic (gift for grandparents), and I can see why cops would like them. They are decently quick, they are roomy, they are reliable, and they are really comfortable.

The big thing about the cops not using smaller cars is based on the fact that when you add all the gear that is one them (flashlight, nightstick, gun, radio, spray....), suddenly a comfortable seat becomes cramped. The B-bodies and the Crown Vics had a good amount of space in them.

Sure, it may be no problem for you since you're used to it, but it sure is for most people. Hypothetically, say we have a person that has been driving for 10 years, but never in snowy or icy situations. Are they going to be better off in a FWD car or a RWD car if they move to Alaska? It's pretty obvious to me that FWD would be the way for them to go.

My father works at a body shop that the city contracts to fix their vehicles. He sees tons of squad cars every winter that have slid off the road or hit other cars in regular traffic. It's always the Crown Vics and Caprices. This is far from conclusive evidence, but it surely says something. Because of this, the city only buys Impalas now when they need to replace cars.

Theres a few cop car thats are beetles in my area, its got all the usual looks of a cop car but it still looks funny as hell.

Sure I do. If I turn the wheel a little bit and play with my parking brake I can make the ass on a FWD car go anywhere I want.

::snicker::

How are you supposed to get respect if you're tooling around in a Beetle? Hell, even the rent-a-cop at the mall would look like Dirty Harry compared to that. 😀

side question: Why do cop cars need to be rear wheel drive? 😕
