coolmaster hyper 48 fan control

With this hs/f comes a 4 pin configuration(pwm) but my motherboard doesnt support this function and so it always runs in low speed. I went to there website and they said to cross the yellow and blue wire for top speed. I did this and all is great but cant I just take a thermaltake fan controller from my venus 12 and use those two wires to cross the wires and give me control or is there something in the thermaltake fan thats not in the hyper 48 such as a resistor?
 
If all else fails, switch out the fan for one with 3 pin. Try Arctic Cooling's Arctic Fan 9. That will give you some controllable cooling as well as good airflow.
