I noticed that the Volcano II has a thermal pad (thats what it looks like at least) and I was wondering if I should remove it before putting the cooler on my duron (coated with the AS). Common sense tells me that I have to remove it. Am I correct?

I tried it. The volcano II barely cools, I took it off and it cools ok with thermal grease but not great. my athlon is idling at 37 with the vII, It was 31 with the superorb. It was in the 40's with the pad.

Definetely remove the pad. Try some nail polish remover, should soften it up and come right off. You want to use only 1 thermal grease/pad and the Arctic Silver will definetely outperform the pad. And don't coat the Duron. Just a very thin layer on the core of the chip.
