whatsup,

I recently got this Sony VAIO RS520 computer. and before you guys start flaming me for getting one of "those" kinds of computers from bestbuy, lemme just say that...I didnt know much about this, till I started searching n all that, on websites like anandtech and others.

anyway, my question is this..

I have this stock computer. And as you probably know, this computer has 0 Intakes, and 2 exhausts (one from the power supply, and the main one in the back below it. Inside the case, there's the CPU fan blowing on the processor, and the fan on my ATI X800 graphics card, which blows hot air out. Knowing that my cooling solution sucks ass as of now, I decided to make a couple blowholes on the side of my case.

So I drilled two 80mm Blowholes next to each other, on the lower side of the case. And have installed two Vantec Stealth 80mm fans. Right now, the two fans are blowing in as Intakes.

So im wondering, is this the best solution for cooling? (in terms of what I have to work with)

Having two exhausts, and two intakes. or should I turn those two side panel intakes around and make them exhausts?

Any help is great appreciated! thanx

there is nothing wrong when all you have is exhaust. exhaust gets rid of the hot air which is the most important... intake matters, not as much as exhaust though.

right now your case is really no better off than before. the 2 exhausts at the back is actually only 1. the power supply one doesnt really aid in cooling the system, it cools the power supply! right now if you got 2 intakes, you're sucking in more air than your single rear exhaust fan can pump out. that's not really that useful.

now just a quick question, does that mod void the warranty? if so, it's not such a good move then is it...?

Those two holes in the side of your case did nothing. Was there anything WRONG with your computer? Was it crashing due to heat? Or did you just want to bling it?

Mainstream manufactured systems are already designed with thermal issues in mind. You shouldn't have had to add any fans, nor cut holes in your case, unless there was some major design flaw (in which case your warranty would fix the issues). Your system has only a minimal complement of fans because thermal issues warrant it to be enough, so enjoy the quieter system and remove those fans you added and patch up the holes you created.

why is it such an odd and wrong thing to do..? Lots of you guys have like 8 holes with fans in your cases.

Yes, this is a mainstream computer. And they've thought of thermal issues. but also, Because this IS a mainstream computer, i doubt they really thought of any overclocking that might have been done. And that is the main reason why i installed the two extra fans. I'm overclocking my video card, as well as my CPU, and that creates more heat. so i want to get rid of that extra heat with a better cooling solution. Also, the way my VAIO case is designed, there isn't much free room to create extra blowholes other then on the side. So thats exactly what I did.

I didnt ask you guys if i need more cooling or whatever. Or if it would void my warranty. I asked what would be better.. for the side fans to be intake or exhaust.

Anyway, thanx to lazyboy for actually helping.

If you were to remove just one of the intakes it would work fine. One in, one out would make for a decent airflow compared to two in, one out which would cause hot air to build up inside the case.

you can also attach this to the intake fan to help cool your cpu. now since you already drilled holes on your case if possible drill one on top, since hot air goes up ^

good luck on your stock mod :D

PS

i'm not the type who was 8 or more fans :)
