Hi, Im looking for a quiet cooling solution for my overclocked PentiumD. Its currently at around 55C on idle. Would an air hsf like a Zalman CNPS9500 be sufficient or would it be better to go with water cooling? Thanks.

Water cooling does generally help because it is cooled externally where there is lots of cooler air to use. Where as inside the fans are basically blowing hot air back onto the cpu. Its just a matter of cost. You can get some pretty good ones for around £50.

Ok, thanks. Could you reccomend any good water cooling kits?? I have quite a big case (Akasa Eclipse62) so I could probably fit large radiators.... Thanks

Edit: cost isnt an issue :)

wow, nice, you got a pentiumD. I would have to stick to water cooling if you are going to overclock this bad boy. Dont know anyone that has this processor, but it must get pretty hot if its a dual core 775. Read this thread for some top of the line recommendations for water cooling setups (its better to buy parts seperately so you can mix and match the best parts).

I would recommend the Storm CPU Block, MCW55 or Silverprop FusionHL GPU block, MCP655 pump, and either Black ICE Pro II or Black Ice Xtreme II radiator.

Thanks for the advice, I am going to go for: Storm CPU Block, Silverprop FusionHL GPU Block, the MCP655 Pump and the Black ICE Pro II.

You can do pretty well on air. I have my Pentium 820D at 3.73 on air.

What sort of temperatures do you get at that?

Are you sure it doesn't throttle under 100% load too?

Nope, no throttling, I check with both Asus Probe and Ai Booster. I will see throttling at about 3.8 or above, but not at 3.73. I make sure to keep the temps under 70c full dual Prime95 load. I actually have them about 65c, depending upon ambient.

hey mixman! we have a lot of the same parts on our pentium 820D systems such as the cpu (except I have the cpu @2.8ghz), the motherboard, and the zalman 9500. I've only had the system running for up to 8 hours using the zalman, but my temps are pretty high, it idles at 48C! How much do you think I can expect the temp to lower when the thermal crap sets in?

Could i have put the fan on wrong or something?? I can turn it a little when its in the case, but i can't get those screws that bolt it down any tighter than they already are

degrade: that seems to be pretty goood temp for a 820D OC at 2.8Ghz. What's your vCore set at, this will tell us if your heatsink is installed right.

OP: if you want to oc more, get water, or if you want to settle right now but with lower temps, get the CNPS9500 (air cooler) without having to worry about the risks with water.

the vcore varies usually between 1.39-1.42 and is usually 1.42. when stuff happens like I open an IE it will drop down to 1.39 for that

I am going to go water soon for the Pentium D. We'll see if temps go any lower.
