OK, I keep hearing about all this water cooling and liquid cooling technology cooling people's ultra gaming computers. I'm just wondering though, is all that really necessary? What all do I need to properly cool my system besides the two fans that come with my case? Do I need to install extra fans or invest in some sort of water cooling device?

nahh, its hard to set up and maintain, and if you use quality air cooling you can get just as good an overclock as people with water. i can get my winnie up to 2850mhz on air. just look into a thermalright xp90 / xp120

well, i you cant get a very good overclock on stock cooling. i dont think you should get water unless you REALLY want to.

thats BS getting a better OC on air than water, thats only due to
1. people have cheap water cooling systems
2. they are too afraid to adjust the Vcore and get more juice outta it...once you up the voltages watercooling beats out air anyday

Anyways to OP:
If your not OC;ing or even only doing a little you'll be fine on air...but since you asked if you needed a heatsink i assume you are not

just go with the stock heat sink included wiht your cpu...and 2 fans will prob be enough, what are you system specs?

OK, so the heatsink is for the entire computer? I would just replace the processor's stock heatsink with a new one?

Yeah, I'm new to this. But I might want to overclock later on.

My specs will be:

Athlon 64 3200+
1 gig ram
GeForce 6600 GT OC

Stock cooling is just fine, even for heavy usage. Only if you're overclocking should you consider an expensive heatsink, and even then it is not absolutely necessary.

Cool, thanks man. That's one less thing I have to worry about.
