Cooling Options???

I have a new box I built with an ASUS A7M266 and an AMD T1.2. The CPU is running at 50-51C with a ThermalTake Volcano II. I do not overclock.

Is this an acceptable temp or should I drop in a more effective cooler?

Thanks for the advise,
Karl

Is that temp at idle or full load? How's the circulation in your case?

I get the temp from the ASUS utility, so I think it is an average. It climbs up steadily and tops out after a couple of hours at the 50-51C.

The problem with my case is that the HD brackets are right over the CPU/Fan with little clearance above it. Otherwise the case ventilation is good, a front fan pulling in air and the power supply pushing it out.

Should I get a shorter fan to allow more clearance and thus better air flow?

Thanks,
Karl

Just remember that the Asus motherboard READ higher than most other boards. Your temps are VERY similar to mine (in fact lower). I would not worry about it unless you are having stability issues.

Thanks for the assurance. One final follow-on question. I obviously have the Volcano II plugged into the MB but I don't get any fan speed reading from the MB in the BIOS. In fact the BIOS has the fan greyed out. This reading is autoconfigured by the MB when a fan is present. What is going on here?

Weird. Do you have it hooked up to the correct cpu fan connector?

Check you manual, because there are usually 3 fan connectors and you may have it plugged into a different one than the specified for cpu.

It is hooked up to the right connector. The manual talks about a "specially designed fan with rotation signal." Seems odd that the Volcano II wouldn't have this!
