looking to replace my h70. currently have a carbide 300r and am unsure if a h100 will fit in top of case with push config. have been googling it and seeing mixed results, some do some don't?

For starters, there's a picture showing that it does indeed fit at the top. You're getting mixed responses because the variable here is the motherboard, or more precisely the height of the VRM heatsink. My 240mm radiator + fans should be no thicker than a Corsair H100 + fans but I can't fit the radiator and fans together in the case. Assuming that my motherboard had a slightly lower VRM heatsinks, it would have fitted.

I reckon the Corsair 300R shouldn't have the same problem as its 120mm fan mounts are further away from the motherboard tray. Its dead center on the Corsair 400R, means it would have less clearance.

with the h70 rad mounted on top I cant mount a fan inside the case, the rad is quite a bit thicker than the h100, I can shave down the heatsink a little if need be though

would thinner fans work instead?

If you can mount the Corsair H70 in either top position, then there should not be any problem with the Corsair H100. Use standard 25mm thick fans. You want that static pressure that standard thickness or thicker fans provide if you'd want a performance improvement.

how thick is the rad for the h100? its listed as 27mm, but want to make sure that's accurate,

Not sure exactly but by eyeballing it, the Corsair H70 is twice the thickness of the Corsair H100. Top mount clearance shouldn't be an issue if the Corsair H70 fits in either position.

would It be better to throw a h55 or h60 in base and leave top for 140mm fans?

Definitely not.

I would suggest a H90, it performs within an inch of the H110 and equals the H100(i) at lower noise levels. And it is definitely compatible

Better in terms of what exactly? By going with the Corsair H100, you're either getting better performance or lower noise(you can run two slower fans versus a single fast one). Just from the total radiator surface area alone, I can deduce that the move from Corsair H70 to Corsair H55/H60 will be more of a downgrade.
