cooling on a slot 1 p-3 500 78c?

i am still trying to get this fixed(determination or stupidity?)

replaced ram
replaced vid card
replaced hdrives
replaced psu

was told to check cpu/hs for gaps

there is a gap (but pad is touching hs and cpu)but only the pad the rest of hs is a 1/16 gap?
this is encased in a black plastic holder mounted 90 degrees to motherboard
this was loose before allowing cpu to be cocked and loose on mobo
since i realigned this (didnt help)still the same problem freezes (hard under load)as gets warmed up freezes anytime.


the bios reports temp on cpu as 78(+ or - 3 degrees) c
i put a big fan straight at cpu lowered 10 degrees max
hs was cold to the touch and cpu/circuit board was also cool to touch


any suggestions?

If your system monitoring program is accurate then you need not operate that machine until it is adequitly cooled because that temp is waaay too high!

BTW, which is it, is it running at 78c like stated in your title or is it running at -3c and 78f as stated in your post? If it is the former then don't run it until you are adequitly cooled or you will fry your processor, if it is the latter then it is running at normal temps and is not your problem.

it goes 75 to 81 degrees c

but when i touch hs it is cold/cool

not sure if readings are accurate.

i cant remember what degree f but i know high 150f to 160 f

did you remove the plastic sheet from the bottom of the heat sink thermal pad... I would remove the thermal pad and get some thermal heat sink compound from radio shack and forget the pad pad=bad. it sounds like there is no contact with the cpu and heatsink.
If there was the heatsink would be warm too..
bust a move to radio shack and scrape the tape !! Joo can doo It! scrape the tape!!
