Hi,

Just bought an AMD TB 1.2 Ghz / Asus K7V-KT133A - it came with a GlobalWin Thermosonic HS/F.

I cannot get it to cool under 53 degrees C, and that is at pretty much idle (right now it's at 54) - at high load it shoots to well over 60 degrees C. I'm worried about burning it out or shortening the life of the processor (I don't upgrade very often!)

I have Arctic Silver II thermal compound applied as per the instructions, and I have an 80mm exhaust fan on my case just behind the CPU.

A tech guy I spoke to said between 40 and 50 under load is normal. So what on earth am I doing wrong? :)

If your ambient (room) temp is high, it doesn't really make a big difference which HSF you have or how many fans are in your case. I have heard that operating temps up around 90C are okay for that chip, but don't quote me on it. I know they run hotter than other chips out there, and it does not sound like it is hurting anything. If you have an AC vent in the room and the room is warm, crank the AC or at least put the case in line with the cold air flow.

Hope these suggestions help you.

maybe you should try putting in an intake fan, or adding a couple case fans.
