hi,

i'm planning on adding a U320 SCSI controller and two 10K Maxtor Atlas U320 SCSI drives to my system. my current case (Antec Lanboy) i suspect won't be able to keep everything cool enough, so i've decided to upgrade to a Lian-Li 6089A case, which has two fans in the front, and two at the back. with my existing set of two 7200RPM IDE drives, will this be sufficient cooling?

i really don't want my SCSI drives to fry up :)

It should do fine. You may not even have to turn the front fans to the highest setting. I have had 3 scsi drives in my Lian Li 60. The front fans kept mine cool. You can always put more powerful fans in. I have the stock fans in my case and have no desire to butcher the case for bigger fans.

Tips: A U320 host adapter is a total waste of money on a standard mobo (max theoretical thruput of a normal (32-bit, 33MHz) PCI slot = 133MB/sec.). Get an LSI U160 (similar to what storagereview.com uses to test/review U320 drives!) from newegg for $38. shipped, LVD cable w/terminator off eBay for less than $20. shipped. Besides which, no drive extant has a sustained txfer rate over 80MB/sec. Only consider U320 HA if you have 64-bit PCI-2 or PCI-X slots and are going to be running four or more HD and/or optical drives. Make sure that at least one of your drives is a normal 68-pin drive (not SCA w/ adapter). It will go next to the terminator on the end of the cable with TermPwr jumper enabled. See http://www.scsifaq.org for lots of good SCSI info and links. http://www.centrix-intl.com and http://www.hypermicro.com are good sources for SCSI stuff - free ground shipping at hypermicro if you mention storagereview.com sent you.
Also consider Antec SLK3700ABR or similar Compucase (6A series) - have 120mm fan mount in front of HD bays (120mm in the back too) as well as grommet type rubber shock mounts for hard drives (reduces noise).....

It looks to me like he's going to have two ATA plus two 10k SCSI- the four together might generate some healthy BTUs...

I would try it first. The Lian Li's have three speed settings for the front fans. With those and the rear fan plus the powersupply exhaust, there shouldn't be any stagnant air inside. Shutting down to clean the filter will have to be regular.

If he has a decent powersupply, I doubt there will be any heat buildup. This is what the case was designed to do.

It does have the potential for generating more noise than heat. My Lian Li is a far cry from being a quiet case. He is going to have a total of 4 fast hard drives and a standard amount of fans to begin with.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I went ahead and got the Lian Li PC6089A. I'll see what happens when I get the SCSI disks but its actually quieter and cooler than my previous case, at the highest fan speed setting! Really happy with this case.

Zepper: I don't think U320 is a waste, I'm planning to upgrade to a motherboard with PCI-X if/when they are affordable. I don't care that much about burst I/O rates and cost, hence the decision to go SCSI. Even on a desktop machine :)

Well even with PCI-X slots, you won't see any real-world difference in performance between a U320 and a U160 adapter with only two drives as all U160 adapters I've seen are also at least PCI-2 (64-bit 66MHz) capable. I just can't see spending 5-6 times more for nothing...
