I figured out the stock CPU fan was making the most noise on my desktop. I previously thought it was the PSU and was planning on buying a new one, but it was actually the CPU fan.

The machine is typically used as a file server in my home network, so it's not really placed under full load, and is usually idle. Occasionally it's used for video encodes, but very rarely. The desktop is in my bedroom, so I'd like it pretty quiet. I'm not sure how loud the stock CPU fan is. Can you guys recommend a not-so-pricey quiet heatsink/fan I can get online somewhere? Does it include the thermal paste with it, or do I have to get it somewhere else, also?

Thanks,
- Eli

the 775 version of the celeron D heatsink i think is pretty ok. the 478 one might be a bit louder since 478 doesnt have pwmm fans. YOu could just get an arctic cooling heatsink, they genreally are pretty cheap and very quiet.

I was looking at the Zalman coolers, too, like the CNPS7000B-ALCU. Some of these seem to be cheaper than the Arctic Cooling. Does it provide the same amount of cooling? I'm open to other suggestions people have, too.

Oh, I was also trying to figure out if the fan will be too big and get in the way of the PSU or something else.

keep in mind that the zalman 7000 doesn't natively support LGA775 (if that's what you have), so you'd have to buy the 775 conversion kit
