Cooling for Athlon 1.3ghz and XP 1600+, 1800+

Hi,

I want to buy an Athlon XP 1600+ or 1800+, but I dont know wich cooler to use... the only good brands I can easily find here in Brazil are Thermaltake and Globalwin. Wich model would suit best for these procs?

Also, my friend had a GlobalWin FOP32-I for an Athlon 1.2 and it worked fine(35-45 celsius) but he had to upgrade to an 1.3 an now he gets 60 celsius!! Wich models could be good for him?

Thanks in advance...

The best Global Win is the Cak II but it's loud, cools great though. A quieter version is the Cak II 68, same heatsink as the Cak II but uses a less powerful fan. The Tak 68 is also quiet but I haven't got one for testing yet. According to GlobalWin the Tak68 is the best of their quiet coolers.

Thermaltakes best is the Volcano 7+. It has a 3-speed fan and an all copper heatsink similar to the Cak II and it cools very well too. The fan is only quiet on low, on medium and high it's loud.

For your friend I'd suggest either the Cak II or V7+. If he can tolerate the noise. But at least with the V7+ you can have it on low when surfing the net, when using games or any cpu intensive apps then he could switch the fan on higher. It's very convenient because of that. Hope that helps ya some. 🙂

Something important to remember if you're going with XP's is that they run a lot cooler than the old Athlon's. I put a Thermosonic Thermoengine with the stock fan(no more than 30 CFM) on my dad's 1800+ and the thing never breaks 43C. That HSF is not rated for more than 1.5 GHz but it's running the 1800+ (1.53 GHz) fine.
