Problem: 1 or 2 cooling fans (not CPU cooling) stop in case...once at boot up and once while running :help:
Story: New build with mostly established parts. The new parts are:
1. ASUS A8N5X MB
2. Thermaltake NB Cooler Heatsink with adjustable fan - uses both 3pin and molex.
3. EVGA 7600GT
The rest is: Thermaltake Armor case = 2x120mm fan,1x250mm fan, 2x90mm fan. 3 EIDE HDD's (no RAID),1 Big Typhoon CPU heatsink cooler (has another 120mm fan), 1 floopy, 1 DVD Burner.
Day One: Build goes perfect. OS loaded system boots and stays on. No issues loading SW.
Day Two: Try to turn system on. Warning that NB fan not on. FYI: Case was not moved after turning it off the night before.
So I turn off PC, then: lay the case on it's side, open it, turn PC on...NB spins right up. I shut PC down lift case up turn PC on.... NB not spinning. Lay case down again = NB spins up. Turn it off and lift it up and - yes - NB does not spin up. :bang: I turn it off plug 3 pin fan directly into MB works OK. So I fiddle with the molex speed wires and reattach the fan to have speed control and all is fine for the rest of the day. At this point I'm thinking loose molex wire and problem solved. However I did 'jiggle' the wiring to see if the fan would spin up and it did not
Day Three: Everything working well for hours. Add more software/updates. Create Acronis image. Time to start overclocking. After 15 minutes at 2400mhz everything as expected. (Remember...this cpu & heatsink & memory well established and are from my old A8V dlx build, so I know I can OC easy 2400 assuming cooler seated OK,etc.) Go to BIOS, raise CPU to 2500mhz and all boots OK. Three minutes later ASUS Probe says NB fan and Chasis fan (front 120mm intake) stop. I confirmed (visual) and shutdown FWIW temps were very good.
So I shut down PC.(I know (hope) the NB heatsink is good enough at passive to keep from burning up... and it was 🙂 ) I lay case down power it up into BIOS to lower setting but I can already see both of these fans spin right up. I back off the OC to 2200mhz. Then I boot up and all was well for the balance of the night (2 hours).
Where I stand: I was too tired to start really looking at all my molex connections. FWIW I have these two fans and a couple more all pigtailed into each other...but I haven't looked to see if the front cooling molex is pigtailed up upstream from the NB molex and where they are in relation to the PSU.
And about the PSU... I have a hard time accepting that this may be my issue. Yes... I have added two fan molex's since my last build (one of them with the controller) but this is a two year old quality ENERMAX EG651P-VE FM(24P) ATX 550W Power Supply that I have used and overclocked with before. Rails are rock solid. Rated at:+3.3V@36A; +5V@36A; -5V@1A; +12V@36A; -12V@1A; +5VSB@2.2A
With all that... I'm thinking it's either a molex connection or perhaps it's combined with the NB fan controller.
Tell me if I'm on the right track and if not what you would suggest?
