Ive still got my XP-90 laying around somewhere, would it be worth it to buy the 775 adapter (~$5) and throw it on the E8400 (perhaps with a bit of lapping ;p) or would I be better off with a Ultra 120? (Ok, obviously the 120 would do better, but at the price of me having to buy it...) I plan on overclocking, would like to hit the 3.6-4.0 range.

Yes. I put it on a Q6600@3510 and it was 70c. In a E8400@4.0, I would guess it would not go over 60c. (or maybe better)

It is safe to say, just try your XP-90 first, and maybe try it again after lapping. If you still do not like the results, then you can always go for the TR U-120-E :)
