Hi,

Need some advise for a high-performance CPU cooler for my 3500+ S939 CPU...
I will do some OCing and it will be used under load most the time.
I was thinking about Thermaltake 'Silent Tower' and GigaBytes '3D Cooler' copper, the last choise is Thermalright SP-97.
I bought a MSI Neo2 Platinum board, so if there are any compatibility issues.

Thanks,
tphss.

Hi!

I have a 3500+ 939! Very nice thing.....

Anyway I bought a Zalman 7000B Cu and it's the best air-cooler I've
ever seen! Good-looking, very efficent and near silent. I have it running
on 11/16 speed in the BIOS settings and cpu-temp is 40-60 C
depending on the work-load. At this speed you'd be VERY hard
pressed to hear it. Recomended....

Did you need to install a different backing plate for this, or did it attach to the stock harness on the mb?

The 7000A needs a different backplate, don't know about the B.

DON'T get the Gigabyte or the Thermaltake, they suck. A lot. Well, they arent't much better than retail hsf.
The best heatsink is the Thermalright XP-120 bu it won't fit your board. Next best is the CoolerMaster Hyper 6 but it is VERY heavy (almost 2 pounds I think). A little worse are the Thermalright SP94/97, the Aerocool HT-101 and the Thermalright XP-90. Pick whichever one of those you like most, they are pretty much equal.
Zalman 7000 is good but doesn't come close to one of the above with a powerful fan.

Edit: spelling

The Thermalright XP-90 will give you the best performance of any heatsink that will fit your board. You could team it up with a Panaflo L1A or MIA depending on your desired noise level.

Ok I bought the Swiftech 462V
But I think I will buy the SP-90 and put the swiftech on a different computer.

Now another question/problem:
Which fan to buy for the SP-90? I will be overclocking, to about 2400mhz now on my Athlon64 3500+.
So, whats the CFM rate I need for the temps to stay normal and not too high? will 30CFM airflow be enough? I don't think so... but I really want it to be as quiet as possible for the needs.

Not many 92mm fan options, more lke 80mm...

A common choice is the Panaflo 92mm M1A. At 12V, it is pretty noisy. At 7V it is much quieter. The enermax 92mm blue or red fan with variable resister is pretty good too.

how about the Arctic cooling Pro 2L? 80mm fan with blue LED's...
has very low 22db noise level and 31CFM... will that be enough even though i'm going to OC?

You're mixing up the SP-97 and the XP-90. You need the XP-90 as the SP-97 is for Socket A.

The Zalman ZM-2F is cheap, loud and pushes a ton of air at full voltage. You just need a fan controller (like a $4 fan mate) to undervolt it....that way if you need some more CFM--as you're likely to while OCing, you can just crank it up.

I mean the XP-90... my bad.

Good idea, I guess i'll get the enermax fan contoller, and maybe even the Vantec Tornado 92mm fan (119CFM), then run it on 7V-5V...

What do you think?

Not all fans start at 5V. This means that while they will rotate at 5V but when you power up the PC 5V may not be enough to get them started. Be careful when using a CPU fan constantly at 5V.
As for an overclocking fan I only know the Deltas and the Vantec Tornado, as these are the highest cfm fans out there. But even undervolted these monsters make an enormous amount of noise (and still push a lot of air). I would get something in the range of 50-70 cfm asn these fans are stille bearable noise wise when undervolted.
The Zalman Fan Mate is very good as an internal fna controller and gives a range from about 6-11.5 V.

I don't think you need the Tornado unless you live next to an airport or under a freeway. The 92mm Panaflo M1A will give you plenty of air flow. Many people find its noise acceptable (but not me). If you find it too loud you could just run it at 7V. The Zalman Fan Mate recommended above by Nickel020 is an excellent choice if you want full control over the fan and don't want to wire the fan for 7V yourself.
Edit: Jab Tech has the XP-90 for $38.99 and you can choose a few different fans to add to the order for cheap- Zalman F2 $1., Enermax $4. (adjustable and good!), Panaflo H1A $4. (loud at full tilt, but okay at 5V or 7V). They are an excellent vendor.

How about the Silenx 92mm fan: 2000RPM, 14DBA, 36CFM.
Air flow too low probably for OC?
Can I run the 92mm Tornado at 7V-5V? is the noise horrible on those voltage ratings too?

I would get this Panaflow, even at full speed it shouldn?t be too loud. You can also dynamically control the fan speed using SpeedFan, MSI also has BIOS/Software for this I believe. Controlling the fan (via software) will give you the best of both worlds; silent under low load/idle and performance cooling when you need it (gaming, media encoding, ect).

For the XP-90, the maker recommends:

Maker: Panaflo (Panasonic)
Model: FBL09A12M
Size: 92 x 92 x 25 (mm)
Bearing: Hydro Wave
Voltage: 12V
Speed: 2450 rpm
Air Flow: 48 CFM
Noise Level: 30.0 dBA
Weight: 110g (3.88 oz)

Where did you find the Zalman B version? I read about it, but could not find them for sale.
